Guess I can say I started out "recollecting" LWCs, and after gathering over 33,000+ counted buggers, came to the realization... Now waddaya do with them all. I had many sets, errors and RPMs that after fruitless attempts to sell, would up giving away as contest prizes. Finally after months for sale sold large bulk quantities at a big loss. I then did a similar venture with Jefferson nickels, again not real profitable to resell the extras there either. Then I began just collecting what I liked, there's the enjoyment!

70 percent of what I collect now is one series of Peru coins.

What led to the decision? I was drawn to the series because of it's beauty and similarity to US Seated coinage. Plus I was drawn in by the fact that I could buy very high end Gem coins, top pops even, for 1/10th of the price of the US counterpart, and yet the Peru coins are 10 to 100 times more rare. Also take into account that the values of most US coins are at a peak and trending downwards, whereas these coins have a lot of room to move.

As I have collected this series over a period of about 5 years so far, I have become only more involved. I now am now studying the coins by die variety, and am the first to do this. It is a many year process. It's the wild west, unlike US series that have been deeply cataloged.

Disadvantages? I still like some coins for type, and can't afford them all focusing on this series. But I spent most of my life buying randomly just what interested me. I prefer what I'm doing now with this series.

The only series I could focus on would have been LWCs since you can find a large selection at any LCS. My attention span doesn't allow me to focus on any one series though. Plus, there are sooooo many interesting coins out there to just focus on one series.

I do understand focusing on one series though. There is a slew of information on any series of US coins. The different mintmarks and years can differ greatly in mintage, not to mention varieties.

It would be nice to know what you want to collect, when you start collecting.

As been mentioned, if I had put as much as I have onto just one or two
series, I would have a couple very nice sets.

I am now at a point where I want to narrow my collection down and make
just a few series better.

My thoughts on which to keep

Main focus
Type sets
Morgan dollars
Modern commemorative dollars

Ones I have and not get rid of.
Walking Liberty halves
Mercury dimes
Indian Head cents
Jefferson nickels
Washington quarters

There are a couple of series I focused on, besides the current quarters and small dollars (those, due to changing designs): Franklin halves and Peace dollars.

I picked those series because they're relatively short and I like the designs. With the Franklins, there are few key dates. As long as you stay away from the early proofs (like I did not), they're relatively inexpensive. This set, I have ungraded in a CAPS album.

Peace dollars are also a short series but there is one key: 1934-S. This set, I'm building with MS62-63 though I'll probably go with AU55 or 58 for that one just to stay affordable. The challenge here has been finding white pieces -- many have spots or stains. The good news is that it keeps me from going wild. The down side is that I still have that one and the 1935-S to finish the set because I've been so picky. When I'm done, I may go back and upgrade a couple that don't look as good in-hand, but that's a project for later.

I usually stay focused on the Lincoln Memorial Cents, to collect the errors and varieties (since they're the cheapest to get at the bank). Although, I do also collect other coins as well too.
Errers and Varietys.

My "series:"
- Dukes/types of Lorraine (13th c. to late 18th c.)
- Dukes/types of Brabant (11th c. to 18th c.)
- Kings/types of Poland (11th c. to 18th c.)

Why? I lived in the first two places, and the third has to do with my ancestry.

Slowly, I am getting sucked into Polish trojaks (3 groschen pieces first issued in the 1520s). As with certain U.S. series, there are mint varieties, die varieties, and so on.

Advantages: I learn about European history
Disadvantages: I force the people around me to learn about European history (ohm yeah .. there's also that cost thing)

I collect Mercury dimes and that's what I focus on majority of the time, possibly have all major error and major varieties, exception of missing pattern pieces. It is the most beautiful coin to me, and typically affordable below extra fine, the key dates is pricier but still obtainable.

But once in a while I break out the routine and try to upgrade coins in my 7070 album.

I started with Lincoln Cents. Slowly my Albums, 10 or them, filled. Set #1 became almost all MS grades and slowly downward in grades to set #10. Then switched to Mercury dimes. Now with 12 completed sets of those have added many other denominations to my collection. Actually Mercury dime sets #11 and #12 not complete yet. Set #1 is all FSB and set #2 getting close to that too. However, now with over 100 Albums of all denominations, now it's only improve, improve, improve. Kind of sorry I ever started that Large Cent Album. Some are really almost impossible.
A large problem with coin collecting is our population continues to grow. Back some time ago there were enough coins minted to allow for the amount of coin collectors. Then the population grew and the amount of coins minted in the past stayed the same.

I have a few series I'm interested in completing (Mercury dimes, Morgan dollars, Walking Liberty half dollars & quarter Indian eagles), but it's overwhelming to do them all at once and I would like to have a complete set of one before I move on to something else.

Which series are you closest to completing?
Which series do you enjoy the most?

I tend to work on one set, but I'm easily distracted by a good deal on a nice coin other than the one from the set I'm working on. Right now I'm working on a set of Kennedy half dollars, but I've had to sidetrack a couple of times for some Mercury dimes and a couple of Peace dollars that I couldn't pass up. Now it's back to the Kennedys, but who knows, I may find another coin or two along the way to delay the completion of my Kennedys.
