So I just noticed a huge spike in prices from June 1979 to August 1980 in my first "spreadsheet". How can you explain that? I must've thought I was going to get rich collecting coins at the time.

I was packing it all back up, and this gave me a chuckle. This is how I cleverly disguised my collection. Who would ever think it was anything but a photo album?

Thanks for the nostalgic post, Jadey. This brings back memories of the similar photos I took and records I kept in my first few years of coin collecting.

Late '79 early '80 was the height of the precious metals run. People that never had an interest in coins started buying at that time.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the story, and thank you for responding. Even though it is my personal story, I suspected it might resonate with others who shared like experiences.
It was definitely a nostalgic day.

I can recall knowing that silver prices were rising at the time. However, at 15-16, I don't think I ever appreciated that my coins were appreciating for precious metal reasons rather than numismatic ones. I was just engrossed in the process and figured they would make me rich someday.

Here is a question for you:
how does your grading of 40 years ago compare to your opinion now?

how does your grading of 40 years ago compare to your opinion now? I would say that my grading back then was unrealistic. Now, it is simply optimistic. Of course, if a coin in the coin shop was marked as XF, then it was XF without question ... and I paid the price marked. I don't even remember what book I used for reference back then. I wish I had saved one of my reference books.

Quote: Nice collection of coins, keep it going . @T-BOP I meant to get back to this comment. Actually, I have no desire to keep this going. I want to keep it as it is, and keep it separate from my adult collection. It is a snapshot in time of youth, innocence, another era. Another lifetime honestly. I feel like adding to it would spoil it.

Its been decades since I was in a coin shop. Do they still have those rotisserie style coin displays where you push a button to make the shelves rotate?
