Susan, I can't get into this decade either. I still grade all my coins using technical grading. I just don't want to mix market grading into the mix. I'm not a fan of plastic, but back then alot of the TPG's were more accurate in their grading in my opinion.

PCGS was definitely more conservative in their grading back then. I don't want to crack it out for the simple fact that you don't see these all that often, the holder I mean.

And more of them (the slabs) are being destroyed every day.

I have had plenty of the first generation slabs and I have to say I didn't like them very much at all. I try to keep all my slabs in PCGS blue boxes and these little slabs just don't fit, they are to short and to narrow to even reach the sides of the box, another thing I didn't like about them is the dadburn coin keeps getting spun around in the slab and you have to continuously hit the slab on the edge to get the coin to spin back around

I know what you mean Bryan1315. I have seen the coins spin in these holders. Mine rattles but does not spin. I keep all my slabbed coins in my Safe deposit box inside of Intercept Shield "slab storage holders". Any slab will fit in these.

Nice coin. I would leave it in the old holder if I were you.

Have you considered cracking it out and resubmitting it?

Considering it's in the desireable "raddler" holder, I would send it in slabbed for a RE-grade. That way if it grades the same or less it would remain in the original slab.

The way pcgs is grading lately, I'd bet it would come back the same grade. Personally I hope they keep up the tough standards, but history says they'll soften up in a year or two.
Keep it in the rattler, they've become rare enough by themselves and are worth a premium.

I'm just to old to worry about not taking coins out of slabs. I know that for some older anything is worth keeping as is but I'm an Album person so regardless of what a slab looks like, the coin comes out and goes into an Album. Also, lack of room if you start multiple collections of anything. For example I have 10 Albums of Mercury dimes and if they were all slabbed I'd have to move into a larger home.

Holder is interesting but I especially appreciate the coin. I see such a nice Mercury and I start to think about collecting that series again...

Not enough money, not enough time. And they're just too small. What a great design though.

Groganking, I know what you mean about the $ issue. They get real pricey in the AU/BU range. I have the complete set with the majority in F-VF with the 16-D PCGS 03. I suggest a Fine set. These are still great looking coins with much detail remaining. You can always worry about the 16-D,21-D,&21 later.

Carl, take my advice, don't buy anything for your albums that's in a first generation NGC holder. The value will go down a MINIMUM of $1000 when you crack it out.
