Firstly I'll say that I detest what they do in regards to how it effects the world of numismatics

These guys are doing what any great salesmen does...they add value. They take a product and technically, without lying, they make the potential buyer want to have their product. They aren't fully forthcoming with every detail but they say enough that closes a sale.

Sales is the transference of enthusiasm. They are great and what they do but unfortunately their practices do hinder the true growth potential of numismatics as a whole.

If there really is a fiery place that awaits the truly evil, then I am sure there is a special wing reserved for these types of swindlers!

Now would be a good time to put the "parental lock" on all of the shopping channels; make sure your children and spouses know there are very bad things on those channels! And to block those shows that pop-up on the "normal" channels late at night, we should lobby to get a separate TV Rating (TV-BS maybe?) assigned to them; so that we can block on that rating as well!

I never bought from them. There's plenty of places online for coin's or coin shops.

In my opinion, anything that is sold solely via toll-free number advertised on television, is garbage. The Garbage Factor increases with the number of "free gifts" included, the volume of the hawker, and the number of times that they emphasize how important it is to act RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND SO YOU DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY.

There's one commercial on now about some kind of Liberian $20... thing... that looks like a banknote, but is covered in GENUINE SILVER leaf, with a Twin Towers memorial design... just turns my stomach.

Do you mean the one being discussed here? Yes, absolute rubbish.

I have seen them selling current Mint products that are still in stock on the Mint's website for a 25%+ markup. Exe. A 2008 Proof ASE for $55 +S&H. They probably just have them drop shipped directly from the mint. It is an absolute travesty what they do.

I think if all of us CCF members would tell every one we know to ask us before they, (the uneducated in coins people) buy any coins from anybody, we give them some educated coin advice, these sales people on tv would not be selling to much stuff any longer to the nieve customers.

Its a shame that HSN continues to allow coins to be sold on their network. I remember reading an article online about someone who tested the gold content of the State Quarters and discovered that they contained about 2 cents worth of gold. As for the so called platinum State Quarters, tests showed no trace of platinum on any of the quarters.

The worst part is when someone who thought they were making the deal of the century, tries to sell their State Quarter collection and is told the bad news that its worth face value. Those are the collectors who will most likely never collect coins again.

Of course e-bay can be just as bad if you don't know what you are doing.

You really shouldn't hate them for doing their jobs. If you were out of work and someone offered you that job, you would take it in a flash. So would almost everyone that says just the opposite and only because they either are well off financially or have a decent job. But when you need money to just survive, your ideals and morals change dramatically. If you really needed money to just keep your house, family's medical, food, etc. I'm sure everyone's ideas of selling anything to anyone would change. As times now are really pretty bad with jobs, selling anything to anyone becomes more and more the way of life.
Rest in Peace

HSN......(Home Shopping Network)

I remember one time watching a bit of the program......The guy said that he has it on good authority ....and more than a rumor.....that the U.S. Mint is only going to produce the 1oz. Gold Buffalo's for only two years.....2006 and 2007....and that's it ! So, we should all buy RIGHT NOW what he has to offer, because, it's LIKELY that they will NEVER be minted again.....
I don't begrudge someone having a "job", but with the HSN guys, it goes much much further into outright "lying" nearly.....or just short of it for legal purposes !.....THAT'S the difference IMHO.
They do this stuff constantly........and their techniques are professional used car salesmen to a "T". (or the old west Snake Oil salesmen!)
They would, not only, sell a bald man shampoo, BUT CONVINCE HIM THAT HE HAS TO HAVE IT NOW AND FOR THIS PRICE !

SEGS does have something resembling a legitimate TPG, just a bit enthusiastic about modern grading sometimes. Are you perhaps referring to the infamous basement "slabber" SGS?

Home Shopping Network, they are a TV shopping channel that sells everything from jewelry to clothing to electronics and unfortunately coins.
