Looks like someone soldier something onto the coin. Why? Why not. It made sense to them I guess.

to the CCF

It did not leave the mint that way - so it is damage and no added value.

It doesn't seem to be melted anywhere and it almost seems like the continuation of the leaf plus it's a similar metal

Whatever it is, it was added after the coin was struck.
There is no way that that during the striking of a coin that
there can be something can protrude higher than the coin itself. PMD

Also to the CCF

@Rome3570, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I agree with the others that this looks added on, I wonder if you could also post overall pics of both sides of this dime to this thread? Thx.

I see this often on dimes. Not sure if it was used as a die tack to snap on to a die clip or what. But I've seen this before many times.

A brazed on tie tack does make sense @coop. Perhaps a little like this one: https://jigproshop.com/index.php?ma...ucts_id=2957

What doesn't make sense is how it would go though to stick to the fastener. Unless it was magnetic?

Not brazing or silver soldering? It looks like a little splash of extra material on the leaves to the left of the torch.

It could even just be glue. Can't tell from the color.

Cant be like for a pin either the back of that one on the link is pretty big like a flat plate on the back of coin not just a tack . And the only kind of welding I have ever seen that won't burn surrounding metal is tig and even then it would be very neat and clean

We might not ever know what it's purpose was but we do know that
It wasn't on there when the coin was minted so it can't be an error.
