It's a woody I'm sure (what else would you call it?), but I don't think collectors trying to put together an MS Lincoln set would have any interest in this, or any other woody to be honest.

I'd say MS-64.

You like it - but would you buy it for your MS Lincoln set?

I'm going to be the one to kindly disagree with that. I like the appeal of this coin and it would fit nicely with my other MS BN/RB cents from the teens.

I think with a professional conservation, it could grade MS65 RDBN!

Hey, if you like woodies, that's fine - but they are variants that don't look like they were intended to be. I communicate regularly with collectors trying to put together MS LWC sets and I've never heard of one looking for woodies to add to his set.

Thanks for the new pics. That last set is what you should aim for.

Looks very good for 104 years old. The darker color could have been from an olive oil bath that altered the color years ago.

I can see you have a dislike for woodies going into an MS-RD set , fine & dandy. And no > I would no want this coin in my red set either .But I would love to have it in my MS-RB or MS-BN set , yes even as Woodie .

Thanks for the opinions, maybe I will send it for grading, just to take some of the subjectivity out of it if it gets to MS62-65 it might be worth the fees.

Toning on coins sure isn't for everyone, I think it does have it's fans out there (myself included). Probably it's not for highest grade collectors, registry set builders, ect. I mean PCGS for instance on their population reports have the highest grades for "RD", RB and BN don't reach 67 or 68 really, and it's got to be the toning in a lot of cases knocking their grade opinion down, at least what I think, condition wise, strikes and marks are similar, but the color difference seems to play a factor on how high it goes, at least with cents. Some pretty toned silver coins will get a "+" but with cents, if not full red, it seems to be a deduction factor, except in very few cases, unless its RD, it's not getting a "+" either from what I can tell from the population reports.

I am a fan of toning on all coins though, I feel it's the natural progression of metals over time, so I don't do anything to try to stop it from happening beyond 2x2s or coin flips or albums to house my collection in. I don't purposely try to tone coins, nor do I try to stop it from happening, Just letting them do their thing and keeping the dust off them. They all don't work out of course, If I get to tarnishing and the edge of corrosion possibly, I'll worry about it. hahaha.
