My last "big" find on
ebay was way back in early 1996. I found a lot of 25 Morgans they were mostly XF and AU coins, two were 1878-S long nock VAMs worth a pretty penny and a bunch of other really tough VAMs. I bid high, won low and paid promptly. Guy was a new seller, but I did get the package a few days later. Only it was 25
Peace dollars, I contacted him immediately and he was apologetic. He did also have 25
Peace dollars in another lot that sold and mixed up the address on the packages. I do believe that was an honest mistake. My package was about $65.00 more in bid though, and he did take them back and I got a full refund.
I tried like heck to get the Morgan deal though. He even tried to get the original buyer of the
Peace dollars that got my package by mistake to return them to make good on the deal to me, as he and I had been emailing back and forth about this being his first time selling on
ebay and photos I wanted him to send. The other buyer wouldn't budge, and refused to return them at all. I doubt he knew what he had (
Peace dollars were worth around $5.50 then Morgans brought around $7/each), I never told the seller what was in the lot either.
VAM collecting wasn't really a thing back then, pre TOP 100 book release. If someone had tried to outbid me it may have become apparent that I had a placed quite high bid at the end of auction time, more than 4 times what I had won the lot for and 5 times the silver value, way over the market value for the time.
It was probably just a silver bug that won the
Peace dollar lot. It sold for around bullion and I had only paid about $50 over the bullion value at the time for the Morgans. Was heartbreaking to lose out to a mistake by the seller, I often wonder where those 2-AU long nocks ended up. There was also a
VAM 9, 141, 171, 203 in 1878 dates, and at least two different 1880 overdates a possible 1887/6-O. It was a vammers dream lot. The guy was selling off a bunch of silver coins from his recently passed away family member, and the lot of coins were pictured by putting them all on a scanner then flipping them over, saved to a small jpg file, he sent me the original scans when I asked if I could get better images, so it's doubtful anyone else knew what there was, no way to tell from the
ebay posted scans at all. He told me afterwards through the email that I was the only person that wanted better scans. I even helped him get better scans of some of his other coins to sell (all junk 90% silver stuff).
