It didn't. If it had actually been in circulation the whole time it would be a worn slick. this piece obviously circulated for awhile in the early 20th century and then got pulled out. It was probably either in a hoard or collection until fairly recently and then got put back into circulation, possibly the great american coin hunt considering the damage on the lower left obv.
