It looks like it was previously sold for $4550 in August. He has a return policy so I am thinking the original purchaser sent it back or it is a shill bidder. If not shill bidding then WOW! 2 different auctions fooled that many bidders!

No sane and serious collector of a $thousand dollar plus U.S. coin would buy a raw 1916 SLQ in any condition, on ebay. Such a coin would need to independently verified by a professional before making a decision to bid.

Amazing that people would put out that kind of money and not know what they are buying.

That really doesn't look right. It's doesn't match any of the diagnostics I would use. I hope the buyer catches the problems before they lose that much money. I wouldn't spend a $46 dollars, let alone $4600 on a coin that looked like that without some sort of certification or 100% money back promise WHEN it proves to be an altered or forged coin. I tried to look at the ebay listing but the link above doesn't lead anywhere. Has the listing been removed?

Looks like we get back to considering the OP's original question: "real?"

It's not a '16 and I would be surprised if it started out as a '17. I'm 90% sure it's a counterfeit. I would need better photos and measurements or I would need to study the coin "in hand" to say with surety one way or the other.

As everyone else pointed out, I'm 100% certain that is not a 1916 just based on the most basic of diagnostics required for 16's.
