thank you very much for replying. I can see the line when I hold coin up horizontally and trying to look across the surface. One second I think it looks raised and the next not. I can't see where it goes all the way to the edge but it does appear to go under the edge of the "U" and then ends between the "Q" and "U." Does that tell you anything? Thanks for the info. I have seen so many "errors" in these new coins on ebay that I see what you mean. |

A few things.
1. Nobody can tell you whether you spent too much money on the coin without knowing how much you spent on it. If it was more than a couple of dollars, you spent too much.
2. If you have light above you and you're looking at the coin with a loupe, if the lighted part of the mark is on the top, it stands out from the surface of the coin. If the lighted part is on the bottom, it's a scratch.
3. I agree with Biokemist that it's a bad idea to spend money on coins where people don't take decent photos to show you what you're getting.
4. I furthermore disagree with learning about coins by spending money on coins you don't know anything about. Your first stop with your wallet should be books, then spend some free time going through change and coming to boards like this one. Just spending and hoping isn't going to teach you anything and leaves you very vulnerable to being had.

Thanks for the good advice. I know you are right and I am looking to learn before blowing more money unwisely. I am embarrassed to say but spent $35.00 on this quarter. I can't tell for sure about what you mean about light on top or below, but since I am having such a difficult time seeing a raised line I would guess it is just a scratch. Seller advertises money back so maybe I'll ask for refund and if denied I'll chalk it up to a learning experience. Thanks again for the great advice.

I'd send it back. Even if it's a die crack it's not worth the $35 you spent. Don't feel too bad about it if you don't get a refund. I'm sure everyone here could tell at least one story that was similar, I know I could.

Yeah, that's what I figure - long as I learned from it. Thanks for the welcome Rock. Glad I joined. Y'all have been very helpful. Hey - anybody looking for error coins I can tell you where to look for a deal - LOL.

plintner If your wanting a nice error coin I suggest just going to your local bank and spending $35 on some rolled up coins. Chances are you will find one before your quarter from e-bay arrives in the mail.  |

As long as you have the coin there, as a learning experiment, why not take some quarters from your pocket change and get a very fine straight pin and make some scratches on the pocket coin from lightest possible to deep ones and compare with the "error" coin under your loupe. I rather suspect the line is raised, but it would be interesting to see.

I find it odd that 4 of these were sold as there are two high bidders, one bought 3 and the other bought 1.
The seller has good feedback, so I don't think he would take the time to scratch 4 quarters in the exact same way to sell 4 in a "dutch" auction.
I would guess it is probably a scratched die and that's all. Ever since the Bison nickel got speared there has been a boom in this category of "errors". Woo Hoo!
I guess a coin is worth what ever a person is willing to pay for it applies here.
The seller also does guarantee his sales
says AS USUAL- REFUND IF NOT PLEASED

If you are not sure, see if you can return it.
Better safe than sorry.
By the way, how much did it cost?
Is it worth the trouble to return it?

What a great idea. I will do that. So if the line is raised that means it's a die crack and not a scratch? Just heard back from Seller. He said they've sent one to Numismatic News and it will be in an article, but will give me refund if I want. Guess I'll be checking out Numismatic News. |

Welcome to the forum plintner. It seems as if you're getting an education already. Lots of folks here willing to help. It looks like you're in an interesting dilemma in that apparently this new "error" is heading to Numismatic News for an article. I'd be interested to see how long the return policy is. It will probably expire before the article is available. Having said that, while $35 is a lot of money for this particular coin right now, as stated before, people have spent a lot more on things prior to learning. My honest take on the situation, is if the $35 is not going to break you, hang on to it and hope for some upside potential if and when the article stirs some interest. Hang out on here for a while and make yourself at home. You are sure to enjoy your time with us. |

Thanks. I think that is what I'll do. Seller has good feedback reputation so hopefully there really is an article coming. I think the expiration on refund offer is up in 2 days, but worse case I lose $34.75. I am going to try what another poster suggested, scratch another coin with a pin so I can learn how to identify scratches from die breaks - if that is the correct term. Thanks all for warm welcome. Everyone has been very helpful. I am sure I will enjoy this forum as much as I will enjoy coin collecting.
