In response to John1's head-scratching emoticon, an improperly annealed planchet is one that is exposed to excess heat in the annealing oven. This causes the copper and nickel fractions of the alloy to segregate out, concentrate, and migrate, with the copper usually migrating to the surface.

I have to emphasize that my diagnosis is only tentative and would require close examination under a microscope. There are other potential causes for the copper-colored reverse involving post-strike alteration or discoloration.

Well, we should know if it's real or fake in a couple weeks.

I've sent it to Mr Diamond for the truth test.

So, anyone taking odds?.......

Did I find someone's idea of a joke or did I stumble on to a treasure in my change bucket?

Stay tuned!

And...
A solid quarter planchet of just nickel would weigh 7.20 grams.
A solid quarter planchet of just copper would weigh 7.23 grams

Run your math again. You are right that there would be almost no difference in weight, but the weight you came up with is way off.

I have examined this quarter and all the evidence suggests that the copper color was applied after the coin left the Mint. The edge is perfectly normal-looking, with an exposed copper core partially hid by cladding. A genuine improper annealing error would not preserve this pattern. The obverse is speckled with copper. This is also not compatible with an improper annealing error or any kind of planchet error. It's clearly not a missing clad error since the normal clad layer is exposed where the thin copper coating has been worn through or has been abraded.

Well there we have it, jokes on me.
Fuzzy317 was right.

Why would someone do that?
I hope their getting a good laugh.

Sorry to have even found it or wasted all your time.

Thank you Mr. Diamond for revealing the truth! If you want to keep it to use as an example of a false, deceptive, example of what some unscrupulous people do, it's yours.

I feel horrible,

Again, Thank you Mr. Diamond for the truth!

Interesting deep fake...I wonder if more of these will start appearing.

Don't! It was a good learning experience. Fooled me as well. Certainly taught me something new.

not that I want this to seem about money, what is the value in the market place could this coin receive? The reason I ask is that after Coop's comments concerning the weak strike, I know a seller with a State Quarter that I think is similar. However I have no idea what kind of offer I should make.

If Snoopydoo has a prospective buyer in "Vindex" I will naturally mail it back. There is a market for artful fakery.

I have no interest in selling this coin.
I've given it to Mr Diamond for his collection of counterfeits, altered, or damaged coins.
Thank you

Don't feel bad, snoopy, it was a pretty convincing fake. Good learning experience if nothing else! Keep hunting, you'll find something that's the real deal.
