It's somewhere in the AU range. No higher than 55 and I think no lower than 50. I'll split the difference and say AU-53. I'm interested in what TPG's thought. Much of what looks like wear is just a very flat strike.

Full head detail so looks EF-45 straight grade to me. I don't see anything that would "details" it.

Coins rotation bugs me,sending it to PCGS for reholdering will ask for re-grade if it will current grade or higher. I'm seeing XF45 also. Obverse on 20 Cent is main factor from what I gather, reverse will play in if markedly less affected wear shows. Betting the reverse of this coin is enough to step it up one. VF opinions on coin? even with the ameture pics. areas of wear show textbook with grading guides. This ones surely no CAC but to me solid at 40 and worth the $35 to get it centered. Apparently am in a coin combative mood again remembering the rule "if its mine go up 2 grades" . Maybe these in natural light will help. Thanks all.

I think the grader was conservative at 40.

I'm sticking with my VF. I will admit, I'm usually conservative, and definitely was on this one. Looking at it again now, I'd say a solid VF30-35. In hand I wouldn't doubt this one a 40, but I just don't see it based on the pics. Even with a bit of a weak strike on the claws, LIBERTY, etc. , I just don't see a XF coin

From the grading standards...
VF20 Very Fine- LIBERTY completely readable, but partly weak. EF40 Extremely Fine- LIBERTY sharp. Only slight wear on high points of the coin.
I think you have a generous grade already...

I don't think you need to send it in for a new holder if your goal is to recenter it. Just tapping it can recenter and spin the coin around.

You are comparing an S Mint coin with a P Mint coin which has different strike characteristics.

With Seated coins all have LIBERTY as incised lettering except the 20 Cent piece. 20 cent denomination has raised lettering and that is one of the key points to grading them. I don't know about strike differences from mints but I think that this is perhaps over graded. Liberty is far from sharp. I think you should be happy with XF40 on the label. Also you can be very happy to own that coin. A very nice one to have. The criteria for an XF40 20 cent piece states: EF40 Extremely Fine- LIBERTY sharp. Only slight wear on high points of the coin.

Thanks everyone great discussion on this coin I especially want to thank apcol258 (new member)for leading me to doubleddime.com When I saw this coin on the block other than it being average looking, scarce and slightly difficult to buy something sublime jumped out so I did some homework. I was waiting for someone's sharp eye catch it on my post. On reverse in the armpits of the R and L wings there are die voids (no feathers) which are the main attributing pick up point for 1876 P BF-4. GC's photos were not clear enough for 100% die markings lineup but I crossed referenced a heck of alot of 1876's and the only one I found was the coin pictured in : DoubledDimeBook-Addendum-June 2016.pdf their exact matches down to date positioning, die cracks, die abrasions, Strike Doubling etc. I cherrypicked this coin and though not rare the BF-4 is a scarcity within an already scarce date. Now, my insistence about grade. The coin is different than textbook XF-40 pieces the dim smudged Liberty is not dim or smudged it appears to be a mixture of grease or a slightly worn die? As I have read - many other things factor in on 20 Cent Pieces besides Liberty on shield. Impossible to photo properly with my stuff but in hand Liberty is drastcally more convex and ledgable than appears in my shots. Additionally her cheeks, headband, curls, eyes and mouth are quite discernable. The gown though showing some wear has excellent details throughout. The reverse greyblue tone and sharpness of strike just adds to the coins excitment. This example just does not like being photographed but had to try once more. Am sticking by the XF-45. The 1875 S you pictured is a beautiful coin, nice one.

I was gonna guess xf40 but you said it was undergraded so would have said vf30 still nice looking coin.
