A soft strike. Very clean cheek, all original surfaces. I think this one could go MS-65 even with the soft details.

I can't see it much better than EF-45 to AU-50.

Definitely dipped but I suspect they let this one slide by into an AU-58 holder.

From these photos, no higher than AU50. Not a coin I would want to own. Possibly dipped and possibly cleaned.

Not often we see guesses ranging from XF-40 cleaned to MS-65 original, and virtually everything in between. Very curious to see what NGC said.

That's why I posted it, because I knew it would be an interesting one. Quote: A soft strike. Very clean cheek, all original surfaces. I think this one could go MS-65 even with the soft details. Well done IndianGoldEagle and others who were close. NGC graded it MS65. I was really confused when I saw it, but I presume it is just a weak strike. These weak strikes are the hardest to grade in my opinion, because it really does just look AU58 or less to me. So how are we able to tell the high grade soft strikes? Is it the frostiness? The flat sheen of the fields?

With MS coins I often don't look at strike, I look to see if the luster is broken or not, luster being the top layer of a coins surface means that a coins design can't be worn down before the luster above it worn away.

the 85(P) are typically above average in strike. this one is AVG- for strike. eye appeal is not the best. luster broken across cheek. I would have never put this in the 65 maybe AU55

I think what appears to be broken luster is just a lighting issue.

Well done, IGE! Definitely on the low end for eye appeal. Probably would have been easier having the coin in hand under a loupe to assess the surfaces.
