Just acquired a second specimen of this very same doubled die on ebay -- 1973 Sudan 5 Millim. Virtually identical to the one pictured above. And recently there was a third one for sale, also on ebay. Makes me wonder just how rare this particular error is. |

May I ask how much you paid for this piece? The doubling is dramatic and has great eye apeal.
As you suggested, a similar error on a US coin would likely cost hundreds or thousands of dollars?

@jeff, have you tried using the search sold items feature on ebay? You should be able to find prices on all of them. "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Sudan is one of the few African countries to have its own mint, in the capital Khartoum. Quality control at what is essentially a third-world homegrown facility is not expected to be worlds-best-practice; I would assume and predict that mint errors on Sudanese coins generally to be far more common than on Western mints.

@Spence - Good idea but ... this thread is 18+ months old. ebay sold feature doesn't go back that far, does it? I see one of these sold last week for $25. I wonder if that's standard value, which is why I revived the thread. @Sap - I bet you're right. OP said he bought two of these and found a third on ebay the same week. Now I see one sold last week and at least 2 more for sale now on ebay. So it's NOT a rare coin, but still a brilliant example of doubled die coin. IMHO that is a very desirable piece, and I think 25 bucks is about right. And that's why I wondered what OP paid for his... |

In answer to Jeff's question, I paid $23 + shipping. There is another one of these on ebay, item # 384755488987 at $25 OBO + $4 shipping. I won't be buying this one, as I already have two of them. Edited by thegrendel

Looks like $25+s/h is the going rate even a few years later. I think you made a good buy! It's a nice coin anyway and the strong doubled die is a bonus. Thanks for following up on this old thread!

Yep,the seller has listed yet another one, if anybody is interested: ebay Item # 384759169431 ... As someone previously noted, there seem to be a number of these out there, possibly as many as a few thousand. But still, this doubled die could well be rarer than the 1955/55 cent. I've read that a single working die could be good for 50,000 or so strikes before it wears out. |
