In the end it makes no difference I'll still call them Bison or Native American Nickels. You can call them what ever you want

Shouldn't we go by an authority like the Whitman Red Book? Page 135 states Indian Head or Buffalo. Page 455 states several times Buffalo nickels. Page 340 also states American Buffalo. There fore the obvious thing to do is tell the rest of the World to stop saying Bison.

Buffalo nickel! Although technically wrong, I'm a traditionalist. Besides, growing up in western New York, I'm partial to the name Buffalo.

From Mega Red Book: "The Indian Head nickel five-cent piece today is almost universally known as the "Buffalo" nickel, after the American bison on the reverse.""The obverse features an authentic portrait of a Native American"You can call it what you want. Its a Bison and a Native American to me.

BTW, I hope no one is getting offended, this is all fun I think we can all disagree on what to call it, but we can all say we love them nonetheless.

hfjacinto, here is a quote from the Bison article you linked to at the beginning of the thread. Vote is now 39-2 for buffalo. Sorry, I guess I shouldn't beat a dead bison. All in good fun. Quote: Though "bison" might be considered more scientifically correct, as a result of standard usage, "buffalo" is also considered correct and is listed in many dictionaries as an acceptable name for American buffalo or bison. Buffalo has a much longer history than bison, which was first recorded in 1774.

I've seen them up close and while they are attacking you their head is not exactly drooping.
