Thanks for the photo Sammeli. Is yours an 1882-H, and does it have the reverse die crack at leaf 4 like the one I posted?

They must be different stages of the Reverse die they have different leaf 2's

I think I can see the die crack at leaf 4. I think it is an earlier state of that die. Is that how it looks in hand?

I don't think that it's an earlier die state than the original. The vine break at leaf 2 is more pronounced on this latest coin and that came from the hub/matrix breaking off. If anything, it's a later die state or a different Reverse.
I hate to throw more mud into this "open O" quandary, I wonder if there were ever any "Open O" 1876's, since all the 1881's and most of the 1882's were actually struck from 1876 Obv dies and the N serifs repunched to make them full. I have 100's of 1876's but don't feel like looking through them all.

i just looked through around 30 76's and didnt find any open o's
also just checked my 76 rp t's and nothing

I can't remember if any 1876's have broken O's. I will check through mine tonight to see if I have any. Here are closeups of leaf 2 and leaf 4 on my coin. When you get yours Sammeli, you can check to see if it matches. Leaf 2:  Leaf 4:  |

OK, I looked at well over 150 1876's (including 22 full-serif T's) and saw none with open O's, so that, I think is a dead end

In Dies & Diadems (2009), I documented both 1881H and 1882H cents with broken Os, but found no such 1876H cents.

Thanks Rob ... I had forgotten about the hugely informative pages on the Obv 1 & 1a dies. Just rereading and examining the pages/graphs/charts from "The 1881 & 1882 minting hierarchy" on really shows the progression of the punches and subpunches from 1876 through 1882. Subpunch O2J answers most of this "Open O" question and progression. Thanks for the memory reboot, Rob ... it had been years since I looked at some of those charts.
For any collector or just keeper of Vicky large cents, "Dies and Diadems" needs to be a premier addition to your coin library and reference. He probably still has a few left.

So my 1882 finally showed up and there is no die crack at leaf 4 and the vine at leaf 2 is the same as yours. Sellers picture where not very good.   |

Sammeli - your coin has also been artificially retoned/coloured, possibly using a product like 'Deller's Darkener'.

Why would someone want to retone a coin only worth a few bucks. But I think it's my photos that may have it looking that way. Looks correct to me but I could be wrong
