Luster is definitely diminished in the fields. Many small marks and faint hairlines but not enough to "detail" the coin. AU-58.

I'm with @Coinfrog here, AU-55, maybe AU-58. There is one heavy contact mark on the obverse, from Liberty's right elbow south through her lap. It has a great strike and nice eye appeal.

Trade dollars often suffer from weak strikes due to reduced die pressure accomplished by placing the dies far apart. This appears at least ms63 to me.

AU Details Harshly Cleaned. The seller did a nice job of hiding the cleaning with the photos.

I am not sure about harshly cleaned. The scratches are limited to the fields and not the devices. Both sides exhibit cartwheel luster. Both sides exhibit prooflike fields. The scratches behind liberty are deep and my main concern.

Definitely looks MS IMO, but I can't tell if those hairlines are from cleaning or not from the pics. The left reverse field in particular looks quite suspicious based off the haloing of the devices.
At the very least the scratches you mentioned behind liberty may details it.

Tough to judge, but based on the way a majority of the hairlines maintain a space from the devices (the halo that Adam mentioned), would suggest post strike, not die scratches. These also reflect light differently than areas absent of these hairlines.
May also just be the lighting, but obverse K12-K1 (head to shoulders and fields immediately surrounding) look altered, possibly polished? Could just be lighting.
Im calling AU58 Details.

the original photo lighting was hiding many of those scratches. I have to add a details designation for what appears to be a cleaning and that fairly significant scratch. I agree with your strike assessment but if I was expecting a straight grade coin and got this I would have to send it back.

The obverse scratch (behind the head and left arm) and the reverse gouge (directly below the second "A" of AMERICA) look deep and fairly recent. I wonder if these are scratches from staples?

This is a cleaned coin. The hairlines stop short of the devices meaning they are not die polishing marks. Having said that, it's a nice AU details.
