Why is he allowed to say this? Quote: Grey sheet value is way over $30,000 Oh right, I forgot....he's a POWERSELLER and can do whatever he wants.

I can not imagine how to sell all those coins. That would be a life time.

Quote: "Many early and better dates including 273 Flying Eagles and 639 pre-1876" In other words, 92% are not in that date spread (which includes commoner '59-63). $8100 current bid--and reserve isn't yet met? Better uses for that money, imo. It's always fun to look at their pics. Notice how an inordinate amount of reverses show? And, every date visible is 1900 or later (and lower grades).

I emailed him and he said reserve=$23K! And he says he paid $20K for it ($1.74 ea). He said, remember there are 912 pre-1876 pieces that greysheet for $10-40 each. He told me less than 10% were culls. Since he seems to pay so well for Indian cents, I offered to sell him my collection for $1.50 each, but he didn't respond. I told him no coin dealer anywhere is paying more than 75 cents apiece (unless there are some on this forum...) for a bulk lot. My sense is that he uses this big auction to draw attention to his smaller auctions. I don't think he has any intention of selling this lot and I doubt any IHC collector will pony up his reserve. Or he may be looking for a buyer with money to burn who isn't that knowledgeable?

Mycrop,
That would be a very astute observation. This appears to be a cleaver commercial message.

If someone wants to buy it before your bid is heard it would be a shame because I will end it and sell it without even knowing about you. He cant say that tho. Its pretty much saying if someone offers him a great price then he will close the auction ( ebay wont get their fees then!) and sell it without ebay knowing of it. Thats against the rules. I had auctions closed for that same reason!..lol..I should know.!

Quote: I emailed him and he said reserve=$23K! And he says he paid $20K for it ($1.74 ea). Honestly, these look like the sort of IHCs that rattle around in dealer's scratch-trays for years without turnover. There's a reason for that-- little collector value. For those others of "better dates", the seller expects a buyer to put up $23K on the hopes of something good, without any indication of grade? Sigh. Just a caveat for other collectors--buying good IHCs is hard, even when you can see the coins in person. It's a series frequently overgraded/overpriced; even culls are put in 2x2s. And culls have marginal value, excepting a couple dates. The only way to buy is at shows, where you can compare different dealer inventories.

I can't find the listing...I did complain and ask if the rules about price guides only apply to non-powersellers, maybe others did as well?

It looks like the listing was taken down. He should have listed them as "magic" pennies... He might have had more luck.

Maybe he sold them and ended the item without ebay or ebay took them down because of how he listed it!

No, the bidding ended at 15,115.15 and then within an hour, ebay took the listing down. If the seller took it down himself to sell outside of ebay, you would still be able to find the listing and it would say "seller ended listing early".

This is the email I received (since I was bidding on it): Unfortunately, we had to remove this auction-style listing and cancel all bids. We don't like to remove listings -- it's disappointing for everyone -- but sometimes we need to do it. There are three main reasons why we remove listings: -- The listing doesn't follow ebay guidelines. -- The item isn't allowed on ebay or can only be listed under certain conditions. -- The listing contains pictures or words that may create copyright or trademark issues. If the seller is able to fix the problem and relist the item, we hope you'll bid on it again. Sometimes, instead of relisting an item, a seller will suggest that you buy it directly from him or her, off ebay. If that happens, please don't accept. If anything goes wrong with the purchase, we won't be able to help you. -- If you have questions -- Due to concerns about member privacy, we can't share any details about why the listing was removed, but we'd be glad to answer any other questions you might have. Here's the best way to contact us: 1. Click "Help" at the top of most ebay pages. You may need to sign in. 2. Click "Contact Us." You'll be asked to describe what's going on, and we'll suggest the best way to get in touch. We're really sorry about the inconvenience. Sincerely, ebay Trust and Safety team

Yeah, but reserve was not met, so no final value fees. Only listing fees.

Pity any poor buyer of this lot for 20K or so. P.T. Barnum had it right. "There's one born every minute."
