VG-08 Is top shelf for this coin , Might squeeze a VG-10 out of her if she only showed one right toe .

Agree. It's not a coin I would like to own.

I'm with macmercury on this one @ F-15, actually close to VF territory. ANACS probably called this a VF. Decent amount of rim detail remaining, the lack of a date and a few high points I would attribute to a typical weak strike. I have a feeling that with better pics the reverse would show more detail as well.

That being said, this wouldn't be my first choice. I'd set out for a better struck example.

IMHO, the price would be more of a driver than the technical grade. The eye appeal is weak because of the weak date.

If you are considering it, here is the question: would you be happy squinting to see the date every time you opened the album? If you could live with that, would you be happier at $30 than $50?* If so, would you be happy anywhere in the middle?

EDIT: *Hypothetical prices only. You know the range of the ask and your willingness to buy.

I'm at VF. Yep, weak date. But the shield and scale on the torso...just too much detail to call it anything less. Though the Reverse would probably grade fine.

I agree though. Price is the determining factor in whether I would buy it. Let's face it, the date IS readable, and so many of these are not.

I am looking for a 1918 D, but this will not be the coin. AMACS took to a swing and a miss on this one as at best a F12. The seller is asking $89. How does this coin get into FV25 holder?

Terrible grade, and a testament to why ANACS remains a far distant 3rd in the TPG marathon. VF-25 and you can't even see the date clearly. Really.

I would agree that VF25 is a bit generous, but after going back to the first pics again, I'd lean closer to VF-20 than F-15..... maybe F18 Fortcollins? All other devices and wear, sans the date point close to VF IMO, but as jmkendall pointed out, reverse may hold it back.

Having such a weakly struck date would certainly keep me from buying though.

That is a tough grade to figure what what they were thinking. I just got a bunch of material graded by ANACS and they were VERY tight. I was a little disappointed because I thought they were more conservative than I thought they should have been on most pieces, but overall I'm satisfied because after studying them for a bit, I can see what they saw.

Well they can call it anything they want . I would never buy it period . when I purchase a coin for my collection a clear bold date and MM is what I seek out first .

slider bite your tongue and hold off posting grades for at least 48hrs please.

i had it at net F15. I think whomever graded this really did not deduct anything for the weak strike. all the high points on the obverse of this coin are stronger than a typical F coin like edge beading, the drape around the shield, lettering and stars. you can still make out a hair outline albeit weak. the reverse imo is VG10/F12

They killed a coin of mine for weak strike. However, they weren't thrilled with the luster either and gave it an MS62, although it had no real marks on it to get it down to that level. ANACS is a strong contender with PCGS and NGC. Even those two services put out grades that people can scratch their heads over.

Could have been worse. Could have send it to ICG coming back as AU53.

I was generous to give an extra 3 points for the strong mint mark, otherwise; it would be a F-12.
