There were some Proof 1855 Flying Eagle pattern coins struck but chances are mightly slim that your coin is an original specimen......

Though I doubt this is real, I seem to recall that pattern pieces resembling these were in fact struck in 1855.

Edit - Thanks Rothery.

Frog,

You are correct the 1855 was a pattern coin.

Correct. A pattern coin. And this one is an obvious copy. Lettering is the giveaway.

Here's an 1855 pattern cent that I had certified. The poor pics can be attributed to the holder and the low grade. The eagle and date are present. I'm guessing that it was some old-time collector's pocket piece and may, indeed, have seen circulation! Bear in mind that, when this coin was made, there were world coins circulating in the U.S., given their specie status or metal content. I've ne'er before seen such a lowball pattern.

Flying Eagle cents were not struck until 1856.

Pattern FE cents were also struck in 1854.

Looks like someone carried that as a pocket piece. Probably to show it off.

Interesting coin. If that's a copy of the pattern cent, it's a good one. Great detail in the Eagle feathers and some apparent circulation wear. Might be worth submitting?

Yes my mistake. I did not account for pre-1856 patterns.
