You are making Roll Sets I take it? What mint state are you settling for? I had a friend collector that would go through mint bags and bank wrapped rolls and occasionally find a Cud or clipped coin. Do you find some of those too?

I'd like to try this, but on a smaller scale, mainly to upgrade the modern coins in my albums. It seems the best coins I have are in the middle: the older coins are not great because I can't find/afford them, and the newer coins, well I don't really keep an eye out for those. I'd like to see what you, and others, consider "BU." What is the minimum required to be BU?

The coins I generally keep are MS63 and up, nice full red, no spots or distracting marks, good eye-appeal, good die state, etc.......I'm very PICKY about them. The slighest flaw and I cull 'em. Every single one is one that a collector would by happy to take. I have yet to find a Cud or clip....but I'm always looking.

BU is one of my pet peeves! BU is just that BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. The coin must be fully red with all of the original mint luster. Absolutely no darkening or toning. I've seen hundreds of people call a coin BU when it was not. Their coin may be unciculated, but it's not brillant. unless it meets what I said above. MHO

Very nice. And we all know "The joy is in the journey"...and we love it. Thanks for keeping us up to date. I have pretty much identicle system...just havent' got to the step of sorting by years and mints, just decades. Thanks again. -Tom

There are millions of coins/rolls of copper cents on the market that are UNC/MS but NOT BU. Good pics go a long way but when buying rolls you need to be very careful. P.S. Nice square tubes Thad!

BadThad I have ben doing the same thing. A lot of work! 80's are the hardest. My best finds were from my mothers container of change. A lot of beautiful bu coins, especially from the 80's with very nice luster/toning and none of those lumpy Lincolns.
Is it me? Or can some very nice coins be found in rolls. I've only purchased a couple "BU" rolls in the past and wasn't very impressed. I find nicer coins in circulation.

mikep - Don't bother buying "BU" rolls unless they're OBW. Chances are they've been cherrypicked already. The 80's are wickedly tough to find nice examples of. They've got to be the worst production of the LMC ever made.... and I hate how they changed the steps on the reverse....just ugly.

Wow!
Very nice.
I'm surprised you have any from the '80's.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I prob have about 100-200, but most of them are AU-MS63 RED. Not quite up to my standards, but I'm going to use them because they are so tough. I can always upgrade them later.

How can I buy 2008 rolls? It seems like no banks in my area have them.

I started the same thing about a year ago. I only searched last winter and haven't touched a box this winter yet! Yikes. So here is how I keep mine for the time being. All the wheaties are strictly from roll finds except for a roll of steelies I accidentally won not long ago on ebay :) Obviously not the best storage method, but its decent for now until I get the ambition to buy nice tubes. Glad to know that I am not the only one that does this, and I agree that it is hard to find great examples from the 80's and even the early 90's. My biggest issue is that after awhile I get upset and start putting lower grades into the mix. For the last 5 years it does not seem to be that bad to find a couple of rolls worth but sometimes it seems as if there is only one or two per box.
Thad, I have seen the coins you sell on this board so I can not imagine what a coin from circulation has to look like to be part of your set.
