Thanks, macmercury! That's some good information to help me refine my search a little more. With "39" and "fair", I immediately thought of the 1939 worlds fair but could not find any ties there either. I'll keep looking. I really do appreciate yours and everyone else's input though.

Thank you for taking time to look and your information, David! I'm still digging. I may need to find someone who deals in Korean antiquities. I would have not thought it would be this hard to find info on it but I'm going on two years of searching, on and off.

Figured I would give this thread a bump, I have still not found anything. Hopefully someone who has not seen this thread may know something.
Thanks. Jon.

Two guesses that may (or may not) help. I would guess this medal found its way to West Virginia by way of a veteran from West Virginia - the pouch likely has no bearing (as was suggested already). And second, that the year 39 is based on the Chinese calendar (I read somewhere holidays use the Chinese calendar) which would equate to 1962 (I think 1962 but figuring out the conversion is confusing).

Thank you, joewobblie! I will see if I can use any of this information to help in my findings. I and my father were originally from West Virginia and if the 1962 date holds true, it may have not been purchased while he was in Korea, which was several years earlier, during the Korean War. The town that the pouch has printed on it was only 45 minutes from where we lived and he may have purchased it there, possibly reminding of his time in Korea, and nothing more than that. I just thought it was a really cool looking medal with very nice artistic work and was curious about it for different reasons. I put all the measurements and weight up but do not think that shows its true size to most folks. I will put up another coin with it to help give everyone a little better idea of how large it is. On top of being a beautiful piece, it's a hunk!

Hello, The medal is Japanese origin issued for the Russo-Japanese War Exposition held in Osaka in 1906. It is dated Meiji year 39. It says on the medal that it is a 3rd rank prize or award.

airmax90, fantastic information and I think the closest I have gotten to finding this medal's origin. When searching the Russo-Japanese War Exposition, lots of info on the war and something I noticed when reading. I do not know if 39 may have also been a reference to the parallel mentioned, it may just be a coincidence. Thank you for your help! LINK https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Japanese_War

Nice work team! Looks like we've got close enough that I can move this thread over to the appropriate subforum now.

Well thank you, airmax90, Brummagem and Spence! This is very cool and would like to thank all others with their input. Thank you for moving it to the appropriate place Spence. Any involved with helping, if there is particular coinage that you like, please let me know and I'll see if I have a fit. Thanks again, this has been a long time coming.
