Whatever that is, it has been added on after the coin left the mint . It is classed as damage and adds no extra value. Still worth 10 cents though.

I wish I could put this coin in your hand to see.there is cross hatching marks on the reverse side where it wasn't struck hard and you can see the lines in the touch in the raised area in the center.

The cross hatching is where it was filed. There is absolutely no way anything like this could happen during the minting process.

Looks like the weight was reduced a bit:  How could this look be made? Take a small washer and squeeze the dime slightly in a vise and it will make the metal move into that area, thus the rise on that area on the reverse. On the obverse side a solid piece of metal will protect the obverse devices. If this was done, the dime would be slightly larger than normal. If the coin is not larger, then it wasn't done that way.

Strange.. I've received two dimes just like this recently. Here's one. Unfortunately certainly PMD- some people really do have too much time on there hands.  EDIT: Forgot the obverse

I'm wondering how many of these are out there and if there senturalized to any one part of the united States. I've got one from central Nebraska. Anyone else?
