There is still enough detail on the hair and the drapery on the bust, I'm going to say at least F-12.

Quote: Can anyone say which type this one is? Also, what is the best way to tell them apart? The "second hair style" type seems to command a premium in most grades. Using Sheldon's guide, this is a type 2 hair, identified by the curled lock W of the shoulder. This type started with S-165 onwards...I haven't figured out which one yet. Any ideas?

It actually would grade F-15 from the front, maybe just F-12+ with the weaker reverse.

Kurt looking on Heritage at some Type 1 and Type 2 hairstyles I cant seem to see much difference. Would it be possible to elaborate on what your Sheldon guide is referring too?

According to my Red Book the Style 2 has extra hair curls near the shoulder. Yours matching the picture for Style 2. Style 1 has very little "curling" near the shoulder. Nice pick up! I agree with the Fine grade.

well, I grabbed a pic all the same--pointing to that curl. Even with the book, I haven't figured out this one. I thought perhaps the S-187, but the obverse die crack doesn't match up. (On your coin, the position of LIBERTY to the hair is pretty distinctive).

wwhitman,
He wanted $200 for it and that's what I paid.
Kurt,
Its so hard for me to tell anything different about the placement of Liberty. What is it that you see that makes it unique?

Quote: What is it that you see that makes it unique? I try attributing this series, and often find the the position of LIBERTY in relation to the hair curls below helps me narrow down things. For this particular year, the E position in LIBERTY is often further CW than on your particular coin. Your coin is distinctive in that way, in that I see only 6 style 2 obverses that come close: on S-173, 180, 181, 186, 187. In addition to the date, another determining detail can be the position of the fraction bar on the reverse. All said, I'm still unsure here...

Kurt,
Would closeups of particular parts of this coin be helpful?

I'm not sure in my case, because my attribution guide (Sheldon's "Penny Whimsy") Has fairly small pics. That's part of the problem on my end.
