Definitely a modified 1940-D. You can easily see the traces of the 4. A good lesson to always check the date VERY carefully when buying an unslabbed LWC. If the spacing seems off, it's probably been modified.

The Denver Mint did not produce Lincolns until 1911. I love the statement the seller purports at the bottom of his ebay page.........

Ended by seller. I'm sure he received more than a couple of ""Contact Seller" about this one.

I sent the seller the following message yesterday. Quote:The coin you have listed is not a 1910-D Lincoln Wheat cent as no cents were struck at the Denver mint in 1910. It's a modified 1940-D LWC. Look at the spacing between the 19 and 10 and you will see that the 4 of a 1940 has been tooled to look like a 1. I can't see the detail in the image, but you should also check Lincoln's shoulder for the V D B initials. The 1910 didn't have these but all LWCs from 1918 to 1958 did. You may also want to check production records for the 1910. Only Philadelphia and San Francisco struck cents in 1910. Denver started cent production in 1911. NoFearOfChange - Ben J. He sent me this reply. Quote: Lol thanks I run a large coin operation and just gave a box to the new guy to list Didn't review it carefully. Your 100% correct. 1940-d modified. In the drawer of crap it goes lol
This along with the fact that he pulled the listing makes him think he's a good seller and this coin just fell through the cracks. .

Well, rats! When I saw the topic heading, I hoped it might be a Daniel Carr fantasy coin that I hadn't seen or heard of before.

Is this not a simple " RedBook" check? First clue even for a novice. No listing,no coin.

Woah... I too wondered if this was a Daniel Carr fantasy piece as said by fortcollins, till I looked closer at the date, immediately thought altered from 1940-D cent. This reminds me of an alteration I have which is a 1942-S cent altered to a 1912-S bought as a 12-S years ago when I was still a beginner coin collector. In these, another dead giveaway is the VDB at the shoulder.
