My collection has more value in time than money.
Sadly, if it were to be sold off at Joe Blows Auction Block, I know it would take a terrible beating.
Now if I had a Stacks Auction type collection and somebody offered me 96 million, I'd probably just go back out and start buying the same coins again anyway.
So my coin collection is probably closer to worthless, rather than priceless to anyone else but me.

Now I am going to hope to hang around on the planet for maybe another 10 or 20 years, if I'm lucky, so I have started to seriously organize the coins and other junk I have around here.
If my Daughter and Grandchildren end up with them at least there will be a big note on top to read the directions first before they unload them.
I recently asked my wife to promise me that if I kicked the bucket , she would learn about the coins and take more of an interest in them before she sold them off, and she said she would.

There is a lot of personal satisfaction in owning a nice collection no matter what the monetary value is on it, but I have to admit and do like to hear somebody say
"WOW! That's a beautiful coin you got there!"
if I get a chance.
Money something to have but a coin collection is something to be proud of.

As noted it is not real smart to advertise a coin collection, guns, knives, swords or any collection that is worth more than a few dollars. Of course there are exceptions to that. Beanie Babies for example. If I had millions of them I'd tell the world hoping someone would steal them from me.
Even if you think your safe here with a ficticious name, there are always those that know how to tract you down. So always be carefull saying to much on any web site.
As for me. At my age even millions of dollars for my collection would not make me sell it. I'm really old and I just don't have the ability to utilize a fast fortune like younger people. If I could get 96 million for my collection, then what? No, I'm just to old to care about money. I've got seveal old cars in fantastic condition. People always ask how much they are worth. Nothing. If I'm not selling, they are worth nothing except memories and fun.
Same with my coins. I've got coins from when I was a kid. My Dad gave them to me. Can't ever think of selling them. He is long gone now and they remind me of him. 96 Million dollars would never replace them.

I agree with the ones who said more in time than in value. I get our pocket change every days and look at it under a magnifier and then I check my list of "needed" coins for fill-ins and if needed, I remove it. Then I have to go to my other list where I keep track of the ones I have (for insurance value - record in case stuff gets stolen) and put that coin on that sheet. Then I have to pop them into the book. Even though I can do that in a few minutes, it's a lot of time for a cent etc! Time is worth more than that. But I get satisfaction from it, so probably a trade off.

Face value of my collection is probably like some here, between 500 and a bit more but my satisfaction level is probably double or triple that. I also look at it like this... I don't want to sell it, but if times became rough and I was starving to death, it's something of REAL value evenn though not much. Some collectibles can be unmarketable in times of war etc... so this is a great thing to collect/save. It's above putting your change in a piggy bank but I do that too! The extra coins go in there and build up. We have nearly 300 this year. I will use that to either get rolls to search (trade in) or use it for a trip at the end of the year (hope to have 500 by then).

I sort of know how that is Tiffany. My son was a teen and had started smoking... I didn't know and he stole my entire quarter collection (wasn't much about 20 bucks) but then he also stole silver certificate bills and 2.00 bills which were sentimental because it was the last thing I had from my dad. I was upset that he stole from us and though the value not great, who knows what they were worth as they were early. Surely they were at minium double their value.... it's sad.

Those stories of someone in the family stealing a coin collection is not uncommon. A neighbor of mine had a Gold coin collection. His grandson stole the entire thing and sold it somewhere for drug money.

I'd say the breaking point for my collection would be about 1000$ to 2000$. Despite the fact my coin collection is not worth nearly as much, I feel that I have put a lot of hard work into my collection (Which is still not finished) and it would be hard to part with all that in the blink of an eye, even for a large amount of cash. (Then again that may change if somebody offered me something over 10,000 or so, In other words enough money to profit and be able to restart the collection )

My collection is worth nowhere near 96 million dollars, but I'd still say "no thanks - keep bidding higher". I've put years into my coin collection, and some of the ancient and mediaeval coins I have are effectively unique; I simply couldn't "buy another one just like it", for any price, because they don't exist.

Besides, anyone who would seriously offer $96 mil for my coins would have to both (a) be insane, and (b) have far more money where that first 96 million came from. I'd hold out for at least a billion.

Hmmm, I dunno about monetary value. I suppose I'd sell the entire lot for about the price of a good used car but that price would come down quite a bit if I'm able to keep a certain few that I just kinda like.

But than I'd fork them all over for a date with Gillian Anderson.

In a heartbeat, oh yeah

I keep an excel spreadsheet in which I keep track of the prices I paid for coins. Based on the prices I paid, I'd say it would take at least $100,000 to sell (no, I did not spend nearly that much but...the price of silver has gone up a lot since I got much of it and the sentimental value). I'd like to pay off a few bills and get a fresh start.

Dont fear the lottery winner's curse. That thing hits those that win bc they don't know how to manage money. The fact you fear it would likely stop it from happening to you.

Does it make sense to play the powerball? If the jackpot gets high enough, then yes. I bet the winner's over that amount are less likely to have that curse.

Assuming 1 to 150 million odds.... figure 2x due to the annuity function of the pot... I figure a jackpot of $300+ has a profitable outcome assuming you have other gambling winnings. If you don't have other gambling winnings, then it would need to be around $450+ million due to taxes. Then your income and net worth would determine how many tickets you should buy, but the number will be pretty low due to the long shot nature of the game.

As you can see.... playing the lottery is rarely if ever profitable for the player.

Besides a few choice coins that are irreplaceable I'd easily sell mine for twice what I paid for it.

Or more of course
