Interesting. So what does the government do with the coins they confiscate? I doubt nothing in the public's best interest.

Quote: jimbucks asked: So what does the government do with the coins they confiscate? Sometimes they do good with them, often they go into the Smithsonian Collection for all to have access to. This happened with many gold patterns and coins from the Lilly collection. The Stack family and business greatly helped that happen. A good story worth telling in a future posting. The bad? Other times they most likely get put into a vault never to be seen by anyone again, or even worse they are melted down.

With only 5 or 6 known of 1886 L.C.'s I'm saying 1855 was the last of business strikes for the U.S. large cent .

Great post West! I was thinking there may have been a pattern after circulation strikes were discontinued but not way out in 1868.

Since I revived this thread (in a CCFPress thread on 1857 The last Large Cents) and it's getting some new views I thought you might like to see some really good photos of the 1868 Large Cents. Here are two one in Copper and one in Nickel from the Douglas Bird Collection that was sold in 2020 by Ira & Larry Goldberg. So an update is in order... The Nickel 1868 Large Cent sold for $19,200.00 The Copper 1868 Large Cent sold for $36,000.00

These are both on my one cent pattern "wishlist". Not many around, but one of each recently sold at heritage for big $$.
