Thank you to all who have taken the time to look at and respond to my post. I thought it was interesting since I have never seen such a thing and to be graded 70 I may just hang onto it. It's part of the full set so I may see if I can just purchase that one by itself instead of exchanging it.

In response to thedollarman- thank you for opening my eyes - I did not even see the "detachment" you found and looking at it closer I agree with what you're saying. Now time to decide if I want to keep that as part of the "perfect" collection set, send it back for an exchange or try and purchase another one to keep this as a side coin. By the sounds of the responses, it sounds like people would keep it.

Response to Dave700x - thank you for the warm welcome!

Response to ijn1944 - thank you, you may have convinced me to hang on to it :)

Response to EDM - it appeared to be "embedded", however, after closer inspection and in agreement with the other comments I believe it may be a piece detached and perhaps "loosely embedded".

Response to KenKat - thank you! I may just hang on to it and see what happens later!

I appreciate everyone's responses! Doesn't look like my first image of the graded side was posted for some reason so I included it here.

Just wanted to say again thank you to the other two who responded! Morgans dad and Jbuck! I think you've convinced me to keep it! I'm attempting to buy a second one to have it part of the collection with the other mints and have this one separate.

This is such a great and useful forum I'm sad I didn't find it earlier in my coin collecting years but so happy I found it now! Everyone seems nice, welcoming and helpful and I hope to help others in the same way.

It appears there are a few 2021-D " Morgan dollars" with a similar struck thru sheared rim fragment appearance. I saw some pictures posted on the CU forums. Definite keeper in my book.

It's a keeper. Or, I would keep it. It is a unique coin with an MS70 grade.

I had one of these coins with a very similar what looked like crack. I looked at coin again last night with loop and appears that the metal was starting to float on the end in field. At that point I decided to open capsule and with a post it note I slid it under the piece and it popped right off and coin was as should be. Just FYI to all. I posted pic of it originally in a thread but now scrap metal gone.

Thanks MD! Would have preferred a die break, but IT IS, WHAT IT IS! This one looks a lot the same but beautiful coin either way.

I'd certainly keep it. It might be worth seeing if you can get the error attributed on the label.

Another topic showed up on 10/29/21 with something very similar: http://goccf.com/t/410006
The OP in that thread opened up his coin capsule and it came right off.

I posted this picture in one of the other forums on the exact same issue.
You'll notice on my coin. which is an encapsulated advanced release PCGS 70 coin.
You'll notice that this one is a bit longer but the pattern of dentils remains similar and are more rounded and actually resemble the obverse dentils more.
Also, the strand is clearly on the coins edge as if dripped like liquid and not "squished" by the holder.
Perhaps someone can enlighten us to the encapsulation process as to whether this could happen at that point because I find it difficult to believe that this got by both the mint and PCGS.

I'm also wondering if these coins were damaged during the encapsulation process.

Sounds plausible.
