I am no error expert so I accept the advice of those on this site that are more well versed than I. This looks similar to a tilted partial collar. Perhaps Coop or others can explain to me the difference.

I would have to agree maybe a bit of a tilted die.

Something I haven't heard of tilted collar At first I thought damage but it's smooth so I tried getting close up view with my phone then realized not scratched like I assumed it should be and just FYI it's actually thicker than normal a normal dime but haven't weighed it

Could it be a coin that went through the dryer maybe I don't know why that just popped in my head seen someone post one a while back but don't remember what it looked like

This is not a tilted partial collar but just damage. The edges are nearly ground smooth, partial collar strikes occur when there is a malfunction of the striking press. This causes the collar to be in an incorrect position. The lower die (usually the reverse die) is recessed in the collar.
This allows the coin which is going to be struck to have a formed rim. After a coin is struck the lower die raises upwards, pushing the struck coin out of the collar and ejecting it.

If a blank entering the collar is not properly seated, it will only have partial reeding as it is struck. The edge of this coin will have a partial reeding and a partial blank surface area. Recently, the Mint has installed new machinery where either die can be installed in either position.

Not sure if I am fully understanding this. So because of the Reeding Marks extending to the obverse rim in the damaged area that means it is not a partial collar issue? Would a partial collar disrupt the upset rim in that area? Not arguing anything here, just trying to educate myself with the help of the community.

Here's one selling on loose change coins. Check out the last photos.

Another selling on eBay didn't show the partial reeding but you should be able to tell by it.

Thanks MAC, I think I understand. Because the collar is out of place the reeding doesn't get struck at all in that area. Not sure I would be able to tell the difference on coins without a reeded edge but I guess that is what this forum is for.

The first coin on the left from the last picture is a tilted partial collar, if that's the same coin from the first picture, I missed paying attention at the last coin with the arrow pointing to the right coin.

Good catch John1!

Well the edge looks like it went for a spin in the dryer altering the reeds. It has the look of an issue that happened in 1985 on the business strike dimes that year. But doesn't look like date on the coin. I'd save it for now. It might be something that images haven't yet show us yet? (but leaning more towards PSD right now)

I know nothing of coins and have issues trying to figure errors I actually try to use visuals to learn the difference I did look up partial collar errors because it was one I have not heard of Now I'm even more confused with your discussions due to some errors not having enough info to go on with google (that is what I try to use to learn) I know some on you tube can not be trusted
