Interesting how it effected the rim on both sides.

My first thought was struck through fabric due to the surface appearance but I doubt just fabric would impair that amount of detail. It would more likely be a die cap in my opinion.
Cool error...

Interesting coin! Looks like an early struck through die cap, and my guess is the striations are from the planchet itself. Does the direction of the lines correlate with the linear striations on the reverse?

After giving it some thought this morning, I would say this looks like a die cap to me. With cloth I usually see a pretty definite pattern. Maybe we'll have to ask Mike Diamond?

Quite a nice one! Beautiful example of a struck through, my vote goes to die cap.

Struck through a deteriorating die cap. Not the actual cap on the die. The design could be full on the inside of a die cap:

Just struck though a deteriorating die cap:

They start to look freaky then.

Fun error and very nice one indeed.

It would be nice to gain an authoritative 'finding' on how this coin came to be - simply for the educational value such a finding would bring.

It's struck thru a late stage die cap.

Thanks so much! Seems like these struck through die caps can just look like so many things and vary a lot depending on state of the cap. Just a whole lotta fun to collect these as there is so much variation.

Looks like a RDV-006, 1989-1992 time period.
