I'd leave it on there. What's underneath will likely look worse, not blending in as well as what's currently there. The flip side is removing it then trying to "age" what are probably whiter, brighter spots left behind.

talk about hiding issues with photos. I can definitely see why it ED'd. there's a finger print at K10 obv and the obv right field looks like its been cleaned and something not good is going on under the olive branch. the coin has multiple issues.

I was reminded of the saying that "Fortune favors the bold." So I decided to crack this baby out and try my years-old bottle of verdi-care. I gotta say BadThad puts out a great product. Here are the results. We got the expected slightly pitted surface, but I gotta say it looks much better. I can see the disturbance when the coin is blown up to the size of a dinner plate, but the coin in hand looks fine. I left the PCGS disc on so that the coin would be easier to handle without touching its surfaces, but I'm very pleased with the result.

Nice job and good decision as you saved the surface of the coin from getting worse. The coin has a lot of eye appeal. It turned out to be a nice buy.

i have to agree. the verdicare did an excellent job. I was really expecting something worse under that green gunk. she may be worth another shot at a slab. maybe at least the ED tag would be removed

Marvelous result. Will you resubmit? Do you think it would grade problem-free?

Thanks for all your comments. I really have no idea if it would grade straight on a resubmission. I am considering a large submission with other coins but I am unsure of the timing if at all. I think I would incur over $6K in grading and other fees so I am unsure about whether it's worth it to move forward.

Fantastic conservation!

The reverse clearly will straight grade. The ballgame is the obverse, and there are three hurdles with the obverse. First, there clearly was an old cleaning. IMHO, that is not enough to detail the coin. Second, there is the area on the shield where the verdigris was removed. That, too, does not look like it would detail the coin. Your conservation really improved the coin here. Third, there is the surface pitting that was beneath the original gunk that previously was removed. It is slightly more evident now. This is the closer question. I don't see anything on the portrait that is sufficient to detail the coin. The only area that gives me any pause is the field surrounding the third, fourth, and fifth stars.

Just wondering here, with two questions that only you can answer:
Do you think you might have a better chance at a straight grade through NGC, rather than sending it back to PCGS?
Would allowing it to re-tone a bit before submitting help the cause?

My original thought was that if you could conserve it, you have a walkoff home run. This is really, really close to that home run. You did well. Even if it doesn't come back with a straight grade, the eye appeal improvement definitely increased the value.

Honestly being a Seated Liberty I would think it would straight grade, They may net grade it but I would send to NGC and see what they say. It would be worth it especially if you send multiple coins in to help cover the cost.
Just my thought. Sweet coin.

Thanks for your further thoughts. I'm not sure if it has a better chance to straight grade at NGC. I don't see any color difference that stands out in the conserved area, so I don't believe it is necessary to allow the conserved area to re-tone. For me, PCGS submission is cheaper than NGC by about 9% so I would prefer to submit to PCGS, especially given that I have a large # of coins to submit. If I decide to get them graded - still haven't decided.
