This coin is in a PCGS AU Details - Environmental Damage holder. I was looking at the pictures and it doesn't look like it has ED to me. I think the white scratch in the left obverse field is on the holder. Thoughts on grade and the ED designation? Thanks! This isn't like a common date Morgan where you can find hundreds of attractive examples. This is an AU55 CAC example that sold for $2,640. BH1964 Bedrock of the Community United States 10982 Posts	Posted 04/09/2022 03:03 am My guess is the coin is very dark, so dark that PCGS deemed it to be environmental damage. Sometimes toning gets to the point of environmental damage. I have seen PCGS graded ED details pieces that were simply very dark and that looks like the case here. I'm not great with this series, but strike looks above average, so it has that going for it. Beyond that , I cant make heads or tales on the possible ED or surface preservation with these images, we're all just speculating. May be a case of some dark toning or a few dark patches, may be more extreme and something we're not seeing. If it's minor, may turn out to be a great purchase for the price. I've bought detailed slabs that I thought weren't egregious enough to warrant the designation IMO, and been more than happy with them. If you're happy with it, that's all that counts. My point/question being; you have some excellent examples, coins most of us would love to own. Why not hold out (yes I known, it's not a common date and may actually take time to find a nice example) on an example with solid images which leave the majority of the guess work out of it? Not saying you're wrong in your process, just a different approach than mine. Nonetheless, it does make for a great thread, and of course, hoping the "problems" are minor and turns out a great purchase Report this Post to the Staff

From the very beginning of my coin collecting, it's been about the anticipation of the treasure hunt. Blurry photos ,not knowing everything ex ante and the discovery of something special are a great part of this hobby for me to this day.
