I also like how sharply struck and well defined Liberty's sandal, foot and toes are.

I played with the photos by increasing the light and color and slightly sharpening the image. The design elements have a distinct yellow-green tint that is different from the fields. I suspect that is the ED. If so, it could either be the result of improper storage following an old cleaning or residue of tape or celluloid contact.
This coin could be a conservation candidate. I didn't see anything that looks too scary.
There are very few contact marks on this coin. On the obverse, there is an old scratch from Liberty's right arm to the rim (and a parallel mark that could either be a reflection of the scratch or a scratch on the slab) and a series of very small dings across the gown, chest, and near the left elbow (our visual right). On the reverse, there are a couple dings between the eagle's head and upper left wing (our visual right) and a ding above the "N" in ONE, along with an odd ding next to the "D" in UNITED. The discoloration between the stem and "D" of DOLLAR could be on the slab.
IMHO, this is a good gamble. If the ED can be conserved, it is a walkoff home run. Even if not, it is definitely a collectible coin. It's well worth the risk.

I am having a hard time seeing the ED and looks about AU-55 to me . Like you said these are hard to find really in any condition.

paralyse may be on to something the dark photos could be hiding something across the R on the shield. it could possibly be candidate for a crack out and resub. the only other thing I can think of is the lack of original surfaces. for a coin that appears to be higher on the AU scale I would expect to see some luster around anywhere and it just looks like there is none. other than that. you will need to assess when in hand.

How about sending it for reconsideration AND ask for conservation? I am pretty sure it will come back straight graded. Or do as panzaldi suggests and crack it out first, then send it out for conservation and grading.

Coin came in and it was clear why it was marked with the ED designation. Our esteemed paralyse and panzaldi on the follow-up nailed the issue. How they did it from seller's pictures is a tribute to their sharp coin senses. First the shield. It looks like there are some patches of verdigris. I do have some of BadThad's potion lying around, but given that the coin is dark, I wonder if the verdigris removal were to even work, whether it would show discoloration and a cluster of pits. What are your thoughts on whether I should crack this baby out and try a home conservation?  This is how the coin presents overall on both sides and I gotta say that it looks stunning and makes me want to attempt the crack out and verdicare/conservation.   It was a relief that there wasn't a second issue in the area above the right wing. Looks discolored, but does not seem to have any missing metal. Most of the white marks are on the plastic including the prominent straight ones in the obverse and the blob between ONE and DOLLAR in the reverse.

When PGCS gets coins with the green gunk, they typically contact the submitter about conservation. We do not know if PCGS made an attempt at conservation, or the coin was conserved and the green gunk came back. There is not much down side in cracking out a coin in a details holder, but you are correct that once the green gunk is removed there could be pits and discoloration, and sometimes the green gunk will not come off without damaging the surface. If you soak the coin in Verdi Care, you are not going to damage the coin, but the green gunk may not come off. It gets down to your comfort level in trying to conserve a 1K coin. My bet is that the Verdi Care does not remove the green gunk.

I'd leave it on there. What's underneath will likely look worse, not blending in as well as what's currently there. The flip side is removing it then trying to "age" what are probably whiter, brighter spots left behind.

talk about hiding issues with photos. I can definitely see why it ED'd. there's a finger print at K10 obv and the obv right field looks like its been cleaned and something not good is going on under the olive branch. the coin has multiple issues. Nice job and good decision as you saved the surface of the coin from getting worse. The coin has a lot of eye appeal. It turned out to be a nice buy.

i have to agree. the verdicare did an excellent job. I was really expecting something worse under that green gunk. she may be worth another shot at a slab. maybe at least the ED tag would be removed
