I am thinking it is damage from the machine that wraps coin rolls. The metal was moved in that position. Was this coin on the end of the roll?

PSD, misplaced metal, in my opinion. Maybe something similar to this.

re:coin at end of roll? no, I recall it being approx. 35-40 coins into the roll. when I first saw it, I didn't recognize it as any variety or error I was aware of. I appreciate everyone's opinions.

I think the correct orientation is like this in the image I edited. (I copied/pasted, and rotated the part indicated by the blue arrow.) A dropped letter from the die? With the lower left portion being bent during the strike?

Very neat. I like it.
I was thinking of a dropped letter as well but the color is too close to copper to be grease from a dropped letter but grease might help explain why it still adheres to the coin.

If not grease, then maybe some strategically located extra metal that folded down/rotated after the strike?

EDIT: IMHO, Not PSD. The long side of the anomaly only looks long enough to match the crosslet of the 4 like Makecents has shown. (But not long enough to be the diagonal part like in Dearborns image using an overlay.)

It might be a piece of debris that was struck and has moved. Seen this before.
