AU-53. Many follow the Q David Bowers approach to steps, which means the steps are a measure of strike quality, and strike quality cannot be changed by subsequent hits/marks. So this exmaple is probably 5 FS, but note the grading services do not attribute step counts unless the coin is MS. Only serious nickel collectors pay attention to the steps, and such collectors generally wants MS examples.

I saw this post yesterday but didn't think you'd like my answer: VF-45.
Good enough to be a 'keeper' but still worth 5c to me.

atticguy- There is no such grade as VF45.
This is high AU all day long.

No worries atticguy - if all I had to worry about was someone calling my coins something other than what I think they are, I would be a very happy person. Also - thank you for the explanation, nick10, and the rest for "testing your grading skills". I think this particular category/forum is fun and am surprised that there is often agreement on grade. If all that were posted were pristine or near pristine coins, I think it would become a very boring place.

for future reference, David Bowers does not grade coins. here is PCGS grading standard for 5-steps that is used as the basis for the designation  |

Yes, some follow the PCGS FS approach, even though it doubly counts hits on the steps, once in grade, and again in FS designation. I favor the Q David Bowers FS approach because it tells me about the strike quality of the coin, informtation that is inexplicably lost by PCGS, information useful to Jefferson nickel collectors. |

Panzaldi- I know for a fact that TPG's do not follow that verbatim. I've seen tons of Full Steps designated as such that were not perfect like in that photo. It's unfortunate that when they post that people believe it word for word, but that is not true. When you're in the game and have first hand experience with something such as this, you know it's a fallacy. Someday there'll be a US coin--probably a quarter--that will feature an escalator, perhaps a tribute to famous US malls. Then, we'll be looking for full escalator steps.

This coin do not qualify for FS. Manny say AU but this coin is an 45 max 48. The grade is accumulate by different considerations and point. Someone say it is no 45, but in fact exist.
