Wow! I thought it was a Walking Liberty half from the 1940s from the wear! That's a crazy amount of wear for just four years!

What do you mean exactly by "I decided to have some fun with it"?

Just my preference of the way I collect, but I would use the cost of slabbing to get another coin.

i think we probably think the same about coins for the most part. I dont slab my main collection and I usually break them out of the slabs. the cost of slabbing this coin wont keep me from buying other stuff for my collection.

i turned it into a pocket piece. it was scratched so handling it was fair game. I enjoy showing to people at coin shows or asking people for grading opinions on it.

Obverse should grade VG-8 or thereabouts, based on Walker specs. Not sure about the reverse but I assume about the same. Wow — that's a lot of wear for four years of handling. Very interesting!

Not my cup of tea to purposely wear down coins, but hopefully you enjoyed the experience.

Fun looking coin. As an ex-lowball collector I appreciate the beauty to be found in honestly worn coins.

I'll be a bit more specific - keep wearing it as a pocket piece until it's just barely identifiable in the numismatic sense. That is, until the date is barely there.

That's the best you are going to do as a lowball coin and any wear beyond that brings the coin into cull status.

Whether you slab at that point or just set it aside depends on what you intend to do with the coin. As a curio in a flip into show off t's just fine raw but if you intend to sell it to a lowball collector for a premium (perhaps a hefty one) it should be slabbed.

edit for spllgening

I agree. If you are going to pay to get it slabbed and want a really low grade, keep going in the pocket for a bit longer. This one has real potential for a Poor grade, so do not get impatient! You have waited this long, do not punch out just yet.

i dont plan to slab it immediately. if the plan ends up being to slab it the idea would be to take it right up till I can barely see the cross bar on the 4 in the date. its going to happen pretty soon. the tops of the 2 and 0 in the date have disappeared in the last 2-3 months. I think the date will go before it gets into the poor range. the rims are almost gone on the back. I'm really hoping they go before the last bits of the date. seeing the legend smoothed out into nothingness would be great.

if/when I slab the coin I will not keep it. people pay a bunch of money for that kind of nonsense.

@CarrsCoins — Any chance we can get a weight on your pocket piece? Would be curious to know what percentage you've lost to wear.

ill get a weight for it, but it will be a bit. my scale died on me last weekend and I havent replaced it yet.

it was a unc rather than a proof. here are some images of the coin before I put it in my pocket. looks like my memory was off. its not so much one scratch as a general state of being scuffed up.

this coin weighs 30.5 grams. I guess its lost almost 5% of its weight.

i carry all sorts of random stuff. here are a couple others:

i also occasionally throw environmentally damaged or harshly cleaned/burnished/wizzed coins into the pocket and let them bang around for a bit. makes them look much more appealing.
