Do you know how these coins were stored--album with one side only visible, both sides visible? Other?

Unless you feel strongly that they all could get an MS-65 grade, forget about slabbing.
(As an aside, my personal opinion is that the obverse toning is disturbing.)

Looks like the obverses were exposed to the elements but reverses protected. This can happed with coins used in wall displays, belt buckles, lockets, poorly stored, etc. and then removed. I would not grade them. I have a 1/10 oz silver libertad I took out of a locket that looks very dark on exposed side, nice on protected reverse side.

It would cost you what these are worth to get graded. Spend the grading fees on more coins . What you have pictured would retail for about 130 to 150 USD

Thanks to all who have responded. I have 15 of these colored coins. Coins were in these small boxes with felt like lining. If the coins were cleaned wouldn't that remove the color? Unless they were cleaned then later toned?

Comments have sparked my curiosity. The heads are colored but I'm not sure that is toning. Tail sides are mostly without corrosion because the coins were face up in the boxes. I wonder if mold could cause that coloration?

Quote: If the coins were cleaned wouldn't that remove the color? Unless they were cleaned then later toned? to answer your question. cleaning a coin would most likely remove the toning. in your case every one of these coins was cleaned and probably not rinsed properly. it removed all the original surfaces as can be seen by the dullness of all the reverses. they all have the same look. they were most likely stored obverse up and retoned however that toning is not natural

Thank you! This is good info. These coins won't be sold, just passed down, so these comments are quite valuable. So my heirs won't have to figure this out.

These coins don't look cleaned, the lighting doesn't make the luster flashy.

Cool experiment since these coins won't be sold. Put them back in the box...only this time with heads side (obverse) down and the tails side (reverse) up and check them out in a couple of years and see if they start to tone and report back to us... smat

I am not seeing any signs of a cleaning that left hairlines scratches on your coins. The coins may have been over dipped in a acid before putting them in the case that could have caused the dullness look on the reverse, but it could also be your photos not picking up the luster because the photo of the 1921 sitting in the case is showing MS type luster.
Here is my take on what happened. The coins were put into the case without any toning with the white/silver MS look on both sides. The darker felt that the coins sit on does not have any sulfur in the material, so no toning on the reverse. The sulfur is in the top cloth white lining that caused the toning, and that is why the obverse toned.

in any case how it occurred, the coins would not grade straight. they were over dipped.
on top of that the 78S has some pretty good scratches on the chin and left field. and the 84(O) has a nice big fingerprint in front of the neck.
