I agree with that theory. I have a small container I usually throw them into, once having thought they might be Black Beauties and worth keeping. They're not but I still do.  The nickel weighing 5.05 grams is pretty much spot on for a nickel. The 4.52 is significantly underweight. Without better photos, it's only speculation on where the material went, but it probably happened after it left the mint.

If in fact the nickle was unplated when struck; much better photos would be needed to judge this.

A coin that is both lightweight and weirdly coloured, is almost always caused by acid damage. That nickel has lost 10% of its mass. It wouldn't surprise me if you told us that the lightweight nickel was actually smaller in diameter and noticeably thinner.
