I agree the design is beautiful, when you can see them fully struck.

But these look pretty terrible in worn grades, especially this worn.

I am a stickler when it comes to buying coins with no readable date , It just doesn't make any sense to me . And what if it didn't turn out to be the date that you thought it was ?

I would have to agree, I cant justify a $3000+ 1916 quarter without a legible date so I doubt I will end up completing the set but you never know. @T-Bop This was part of a lot that I purchased, worse case the lot pays for almost everything or I can return the lot, Though I am pretty confident that the last digit is a 3. I will post new photos with closeups of the date / mm when I receive the coins in a week.

If you're gonna buy a semi-key date SLQ, buy one with a fully legible date
The extra money you pay up front will be worth it later on

I put together a set of SLQ with full dates without the 1916 and completed the set this year. The 23S is difficult to find in grades below VF25 with a full date. I started off doing the set raw, but when I got into the better dates, I noticed on ebay that I could get a better coin for the same money in a TPG holder as the quality raw coins were often selling for more than the coins in a TPG holder. I ended up with 9 of the coins in a TPG holder.

This coin came in today. The last digit appears to be a "4" at some angles
I dont have my main scope with me so I will have to wait...

At my other scope and its very tough to tell... You guys were obviously correct and coins with barely readable dates are not worth it.. Not worth the hassle & straining my eyes.. This is my first and last purchase of a coin with a barely readable date unless slabbed..

I could see an argument for either a 1924 or 1923 The sharp slant could either be from the 3 or the 4.

Here are a few more comparison shots with the 1924 s quarter I got from a junkbin and this "1923". It appears similar and different at the same time..

I am seeing a 4 with this image. The sharp slant is from a 4 as the angle of the slant is closer to the 4 than a 3.

It looks more like a 4 than a 3 IMO.

In the last photos, I did see it as more of a 3 than a 4, but maybe not worth it overall, glad you were able to get a refund.
