G4 for me, large sections of rim worn off on both sides. Agree that it's a tough coin unless you want to spend. Trivia - 1903-S was an odd year for the reverse design type. Yours is Reverse 2 "thin ribbon" (the right ribbon end), which was replaced in 1901 by Reverse 3 "thick ribbon." Yet for 1903-S the old thin ribbon reverse was used on a large majority of the SF coins, and the "correct" thick ribbon reverse is scarce.

I'm going with G6 also, due to the grade I think they probably put it in a straight holder

I think NGC got this one wrong by a full grade. Though there appears to be reverse rim weakness in pics if coin is slightly canted in hand full definitive reverse rims are discernible with no fields worn into rim.
The obverse has rims of a G-6 but missing the magic L and a portion of I for a slider G-6 i.m.o. The hairline scratches are old and subdued and barely show under a 10x loop in hand. Perhaps the grader used a magnifier screen with heavy illum and zeroed in on those scratches Who knows?
Thought this coin would highlight the subjectivity of grading. Thanks for input.

I think you'd have to see a hint of inner ear detail and a bit more leaf vein on the reverse to get to G6. I agree that AG3 is a grade too low.

I think this one was net graded due to the scratches. I have no problem with AG-3 (the reverse rim is missing on 40% of the reverse).

Looks G-4 to me. Might have gotten "details" for the scratches.

Good-4 for detail. With the scratches and weak reverse rim I can see NGC giving it an AG-3 as a no-problem net grade.
