Very unique. I'm assuming the struck-through area is incuse? My eyes can only see it as raised but then my head explodes trying to figure out what happened.

I'm also seeing it as raised, but that must be an optical illusion. Remarkable how sharp the lettering is in the struck through area—almost like it was a fragment of die rather than a struck coin (although then it wouldn't be mirror image). Great coin!

It is definitely incuse. It looks raised, and that is an illusion in the picture.

NGC label reads: Struck through struck fragment.

My guess as to how it happened is a delamination on a previously struck coin made it in with the next planchet, causing the mirror image of the fragment to get pressed into this coin, giving you what is seen here.

Considering the obverse lamination on your coin, I was thinking a bad batch of planchets and one of the previous ones busted up. But then the fragment got stuck to the reverse die, right? It's interesting how it's in almost exactly the spot it would be in on the obverse side.

While it is on the correct side of the coin, it does not exactly line up with where the "fragment" came from. I have looked at this coin for hours, trying to figure it out. It's still a mystery to me how it came out this way.

I jumped on it as I have never seen something like it before. With all the double strikes, strikes off center, laminations, broad strikes, etc..., it seemed much rarer at the end of the day. Whomever collects Indian cent errors would certainly be interested in this one! For now, it stays with me :).

Redraider - all I can say is A) you're lucky I didn't see it first and B) if it had to end up in someone's collection I'm glad it's in yours. I only have 4 dates of the Indian cents I don't have errors on ('73, '83, '09, and '09S).

A rough sketch of the fragment that acted like a die. Theory - it stuck to the obverse die after the rest of it was ejected, then the dies banged with no planchet, the fragment then stuck to the reverse die, and struck the OP coin. My brain hurts.

RedRaider, that is one of the most interesting and intriguing errors I've seen. Thank you for sharing it with us.

This one is a rarity for sure, I can't imagine how sharp the strike is in the fragment.

Don't you all just really, really wish the die crack on the observe was visible on the fragment on the reverse? If just a tiny bit more was there on that fragment ...

Congrats, that is a fantastic looking error! Seems worthy of a feature in CoinWorld or ErrorScope.
