Why is there no gold Eagle for the 2028 LA Olympics?
I am sure that Donna Pope would have made a different decision.

@sel: The US primarily issues Gold Half Eagles in its commemorative programs these days. The proposed LA28 commemorative coin program includes a Half Eagle ($5.00 coin).

How about the legacy of her Copper plated Zinc cent coins?

The wheels for the switch to zinc-plated cents were set in motion before Pope became Mint Director.

I would like to believe that if she had her way, the cent would have ceased being minted for circulation. Fantasy? Maybe, but still...

I was hoping someone would post a Zinc Lincoln! I wonder why she didnt change the nickel to steel or was it only recently that the mint director can change the composition of our coinage . . .

Any change in the composition would first have required authorization from Congress. This is the same today,

Though bills have been introduced in Congress that would give the Director of the US Mint the authority to change coin compositions, based on study results, the bills have not been passed or become US law.yet,

Mrs Pope Did Wonderful Things That Changed or Altered the Path for Certain Coins . Changes in Our Daily Circulating Coinage and More.

She was Twice placed by President Ronald Reagan as U S Mint Director, As far as Commemorative coins, She had Much to do with the Start of The American Silver/Gold Eagles Program, The First ASE was Minted in 1986 from the Well Deserving, San Francisco's Mint, The Granite Lady..... From This, We Now Have a Series that has a Strong History, 39 Years and Going Very, Very Strong.......

Her Help in " Altering " the Mostly Copper Lincoln Memorial cent into a New Composition We Now Have, Disintegrating/ Disappearing Coins. People Tend to Recall, Only The Last Good Things Others did .....

That's the date listed in her obituary. Other than looking at that, I haven't seen anything listing the date.
