I appreciate the continued replies. I always look forward to @Panzaldi's considered and detailed evaluation of the Morgans.

I hadn't thought of sending back to NGC for attribution. That would seem to make the most sense, even though it might cut into potential returns. I may just go that route. The coin is on its way and should be here in a day or two. Hopefully, I'll be back with good news.

Obverse is a 65 all day. I don't think the reverse would be enough to pull it down to a 64. I think it is correctly graded.

MS65 no problem

83P has a ton of VAM's that are nearly indistinguishable without scope photos to focus on die markers such as gouges and polishing lines.

The pitting is a pretty good clue, but not diagnostic in and of itself.

Best of luck -- hopefully your hunch is correct!

Thanks for the continued evaluations and well-wishes. I know it is difficult to evaluate based only on the photos provided. I have received tracking info and the package is currently sitting in Minneapolis right now. I'm obviously eager to get the coin in hand for microscopic evaluation.

@Psuman08 - I'm honored that you used your 1000th post to comment!

I'm with Cherrypicker on the VAM this is one I've looked for a long time in the wild as a cherrypick myself and been unsuccessful - too many times. I've bought quite a few thinking it was that Top100 only to be disappointed when the coin arrived in hand.

That said I'm at MS65 on the coin and think it's pretty solid for the grade.

Some may remember the one I found in an ANACS MS-62 slab about a year ago.

It's still in the unattributed holder and I had every intention of sending to PCGS. Maybe I'll put together a few and submit. In the meantime, I'm excited to see how this one turns out.

Edited to add MS62 photo

Remember it? I was all over that thread then, still haven't found one that wasn't already labeled as such and cost an arm and a leg. DOH!

The coin is due for delivery today. The more I look at the photo, the more I am convinced that you all are right. The crack appears to deviate from the vamworld plate coin. On the vam-10, the die crack follows a continuing path through the point of the neck.
This one has the zigzag of the vam-14. Angles and lighting make it difficult to say. I should have news this evening.

Either way 1883-P dollars that are nice are easy to resell I've found, at least I never lost money try to score a VAM-10 in all the Morgans I purchased with false hopes.

This one is really nice looking.

I'm sure I can get my money back from this purchase and even a little more. That's what made it worth taking a chance.

This morning before work, I brought out the VAM-14 Morgan I already have and am now convinced that's what will show up in the mailbox today. Very disappointing, but that's how the game is played.

my comment about MS64 vs 65 was if the coin was to be resubbed to PCGS they may not see a 65. the obv is 65 all day for any TPG. PCGS may look at the little lighter strike and field marks on the rev to keep it under that. its a moot point since the OP is not sending it off to them

Coin arrived and it is definitely not a vam-10. Beautiful coin and vam-14 as I thought. Thanks for the expert opinions and I'll keep looking.
