Part of the problem is that the images present us with a photographic illusion wherein the grooves in the reeding appear raised and the ridges of the reeding appear recessed. Once you mentally correct for this misperception, it's clear that these letters are confined to the ridges and that they represent contact marks from another coin. In other words, this is post-strike damage.

The lighting and shadows are confusing, so I can see what you are are saying.

@mkediamond's explanation makes perfect sense, we all need to think out of the box at times to get a better perspective.

Would be fun to view/examine this example in-hand.

Things aren't the way they are on the first glance. Sometimes this gets me looking at pictures. I have to look away for a while before I can see it right.

Indeed. Seeing it in three dimensions would help.

Surprised we don't see this more often.

My signature line used to read "There are two sides to every coin. The edge makes three." For some reason it was removed a couple of years ago. I guess it offended somebody. Thanks, Doug.

Did you take a long break from the forum at some point? Signatures are one of the several things that are automagically removed after many months of activity.

Thanks Mike.
Actually I try to cover up my mental situation. Glad everyone else has the same problem.

Wonder what the reeds look like on the opposite side?

I often suffer from Pareidolia when it comes to coins, but this post had me check the edges of about 100 1/2 dollars today
