The seller just threw in a 2012 magnetic cent to fill the hole.

I bet he had a lot of empty cases and needed to fill the hole to look good. My 1st thought was...where did that cent come from....as well. Edit: Answered while I typed.

He said it cost him 7$ for the cases so I was getting a good deal, I think they were leftovers like you suggest!

Now thats a nice set. To get the full set from CA it would be $12.55 plus tax and shipping.

I think the Mint was hoping to to produce King Charles III 2023 coins before year-end. Not sure if that will happen. I'm wondering if they are still minting 2022 coins for circulation this year?

My hope is for a 2023 "Classic Uncirculated Coin Set" featuring Charles lll this November or December. As well I could be persuaded to purchase a Charles lll proof Commemorate Silver Dollar if one should show up this year. I have the Royal Cypher dollar.

When I took a tour of the Winnipeg Mint in June they were most definitely minting 2022-dated coins. I don't believe there are any special markings on them to distinguish them from the ones actually minted in 2022.

The new effigy was authorized by an order-in-council last week (the designer is Steven Rosati), so hopefully there will be movement soon.

Quote:WINNIPEG, MB, Nov. 10, 2023 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mint is holding an event to unveil the effigy His Majesty King Charles III that will appear on the obverse of all Canadian coins and strike the first circulation coin bearing this new image. This ceremony will take place at the Mint's Winnipeg manufacturing facility on November 14, 2023. Perhaps the coin/s will be available for purchase before the new year.

Do you think it's likely coin sets with the new effigy will be available for purchase on Nov 14? I think I'll be standing by the doors before the Mint Boutique opens to see if I could be the first to get my hands on one!

I think I found the answer to my own question. It sounds like they are striking the first circulation coin on Nov 14.
