Do we know if this coin was actually struck in 1796? Just curious if this was a restrict like some of the 1804 dollars.

I haven't seen any reference indicating that this is a restrike. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and it seems to have lots of lintmarks because presentation pieces were rubbed using cloths to polish planchets and dies.

 - a beautiful coin indeed! It looks like this type (issued also in 1797, with a four-digit mintage) might well have been the only US silver coinage type with a face value given on the coin as a fraction. (All the others had either words, a value in cents, a value in an integer amount of dollars, or nothing at all.) I saw a high-grade example in a video a few months ago and that 1/2 really grabbed my attention because I thought only the cents did that fraction thing. Apparently it's only the cents and this one very scarce type. |
