I don't see any wear either. Love the clashes and bisecting die crack. Not sure about the originality of surfaces, but I would sure be happy with that at an AU details price.

Can't help so much with grading, but the die clashes are really nice on this one.

There is some light friction so I'd be at AU-58details, older cleaning.

Older cleaning I could see, but those first two images sure look like an uncirculated coin to me.

Honestly thrilled either way - crisper than expected. Paid low EF price for an AU/UNC details that is at best a questionable AU call. Bonus for rotation, bisecting die cracks, and the clashes.

Not sure John. Under scope it looks like unaffected copper so maybe a bit of surface build-up that was removed in cleaning. Similar in appearance to date area - just more concentrated.

Could be just the lighting but in the first obverse picture there appears to be some rub from the forehead to the earlobe, chin and jaw area. I love the boldness of the stars! On the reverse the appears to be some rub to some of the leaves. If those scratches are on the holder as you claim, I can see AU-58.

nice photos DOCC. the only issue is that when you are talking a higher end AU coin only the highest points of some of the devices might show some wear. in this case, there is just a tad too much glare on those high points to determine that. the only way to tell is to kill any overhead light or have the coin in hand where it can be rotated.

no doubt the coin was cleaned though. so AU details or UNC details.

Did not see the lips and chin clash before - sweet addition. Rotation is 15%

This appears to be a super slider, either AU-58 or low MS tops.

The red color around the date is suspect of an old dipping or color alteration. The color is likely second hand and slightly unnatural which is what PCGS may have seen.

I'm at AU58 sharpness, just a faint trace of rub. Yeah, it's been recolored, but it doesn't look half bad.

thx all, happy with the pick up for sure. lots going on with it.

panzaldi - you seem to have the TPG gig nailed down. Quick q on details:

when you have something like this with a cleaning and color alteration (lets just say confirmed alteration), how do they make the decision on which gets tagged? I've never see a coin marked with both. I guess they can't based on their numbering system e.g. 92 but do you know how they determine which takes precedence when multiple issues are present? the worst offender?

obviously is difficult to say what a TPG would do since they are not 100% accurate especially today it seems they are missing quite a bit. I'm thinking they may have had challenges finding graders just like any other business today so some of them may not be well versed in all aspects of all the series.

my thought on your question is that the "cleaned" is more a generic term used to cover multiple types of cleaning. color alteration is most definitely very specific. I think they would call the more specific issue when assigning a designation...thats if they catch it. keep in mind that they grade thousands of coins and only take a couple minutes looking at a coin. it probably comes down to who is looking at it. if the initial grader calls it cleaned most likely the second look grader will just agree and assign that designation

thx for the insights - I agree the most specific issue should take precedence.

my understanding on 'flow' is there are 2 assigned graders per coin that cannot see each others results (no cross reference). a 3rd grader is pulled in if the first 2 grade results differ. Not certain if the 3rd has access to others immediately but I would assume the 3rd must assign a grade/designation first and then they get access to all results an act as an arbitrator. Essentially averages all three.
