I believe it is an 1808, Sheldon 277. The reverse of the O.P coin is not that used in the only die variety for 1809.
S-277 obverse also often has a missing 1st. star, like the O.P coin

I would post a picture of a S-277 but I don't have one small enough (300 KB) to post in this forum. Please google 1808, S-277.

Germanicvs is correct, has to be 1808. I looked it up like he said. That big die crack on the reverse is a dead giveaway.

I will assume you are correct... Given the odd look around the number, I have to assume someone tooled the 8 into a 9.

I looked it up and the reverse is a match for the 1808. I am glad I didn't spend a lot on this purchase. Another lesson learned about dates that look damaged, they could be tooled. Thanks for all your responses, it really helps to have knowledgeable collectors to get feedback on posted questions.

Thank you, @52Raymo for your kind words.

I may know a thing or two about early American coppers. However, the real expert was the gentleman who posted here a few times up to about 4-6 months ago. I forget know what his name was, but I was continually learning from him.
(pity he seem not to post anymore).

An inexpensive lesson then. The coin is great for educational purposes. I am sure it will help someone else here in the future.

Yep, the reverse crack is the diagnostic for the 277 aka the 12 star obverse. Your coin represents the 12 star LDS variety well because star 1 appears to be entirely missing.
