Quote: I paid and put this in the message. That should smooth things up some.
Sorry for the previous message, I should have looked more closely at the image. I hope there are no hard feelings. Thank you, w-dog
Thank you all CCF members for helping me sort through this. Sometimes being in my head all alone is like strolling through a bad neighborhood at 2:00 AM. You did the right thing and showed that you are the better/bigger man in this transaction. Hats off to you!

Sometimes C-Hunter, it is hard to do what is best for me. Intellect over emotions usually wins most situations. Maybe this post might help somebody else someday. Hopefully the nickel will look better in hand. I don't like dented rims and now I am sure to watch for them. I know the coin will still take care of itself in good time. Right now I guess I lost a couple bucks and I can resume on a full tank of serenity.
Good night, School bus starts at 6:30 AM

I think it's up to you to choose how you follow through, although I also see the dint in the pic--but it's easy to miss with that writeup. People think that ebay is where auctions/transactions are made easy, which means that negotiating, "wiggle room" is somehow reduced. Obviously, this seller doesn't respond well to criticism, and has poor negotiation skills. It does not help that ebay makes reneging on closed auctions harder than years back. Well, just some random thoughts...for what it's worth. On the other end, I'll forward a great experience I had on ebay where I did not see a rim dent on a coin until it arrived. When I brought this up to the seller, he gave me a refund--plus 50% towards buying a new item. One eBayer knows how to retain customers--the other does not.

I clicked the link as soon as I saw it, before I'd read any more but the first line of your post.
The dent immediately jumped out at me. There's a highlight cause by it in a place where there shouldn't be a highlight in that picture.
You've already done the right thing, so any advice is redundant, but I would mention that it's a pretty small price to pay for a valuable lesson.

One thing I have noticed with rim dings is that if you place the coin in an album, often you can't even see the rim ding. Of course, you know it's there, but you can always upgrade later. It will have a place in your collection until then.

Just came to this thread. I tend to agree you should complete the transaction. The seller was in error for not mentioning the problem but you as a buyer were also in error for not researching your purchase properly. I know it gets exciting when you see something you want and tunnel vision tends to lead to rose tinted glasses. But you of all people wheezydog. I would have never pegged you as the type to fall to this behavior especially on Jeffersons..:-)

I agree with others, the onus was on you to grade from the picture. You did the right thing.
His attitude sucks and I would mark him down on that, plus on the item not as described section. I think the worst feedback I would give would be neutral.

The seller contacted the second high bidder and tried to sell it outright to him as I think you need to wait 72 hours to make a second chance offer. His error was telling me about it and forwarding the email Dear wheezydog, I tried the second chance offer deal and here is the answer I got back the the possible buyer. Dear metoo2003, (seller) ( name not withheld this time ) I hate that a person can win and not pay here. ebay ought to relist for free and send the weasel the bill or fine him and make him pay or bar him. Anyway long story short I have several of these great old coins and in 39-D. Also I just seen your msg when I went to my ebay to pay for a similar 39-D I just won. Got a good deal, as no one seems to be bidding or to appreciate these old gems, this one looking to be about AU-50. I appreciate your offer, but just don't need it. I hope ebay helps you on this matter. Explain that he lost you a sale twice. I hope you do well on a second try. Thanks and best of luck, Joe (second high bidder) I think I made another mistake or two in my life, in the end, this seller will have his coin back I believe. Every time I look at it here it will get me to remembering this and I can't sell it off to anyone else. It would make for a funny contest prize though wouldn't it? Later I get this email as he saw I paid. Dear wheezydog, Thank you for keeping your contractable responsiblities with ebay rules. Owner Operator Metoo2003 -metoo2003 Lets just remember that good old wheezydog still paid within a few hours as usual for an auction he won. I just needed to support of the community to keep from harming myself and I thank you all for that.

Quote: Explain that he lost you a sale twice Sigh...and lump more blame on you..what, why, how? The cynic is me would suspect the above email is contrived--just to support his stance. I pick my battles, but here he's taken a small disagreement and drawn it out into a messy, overblown affair. Yeah, OK--"contractual responsibilities" and all that--but he hasn't won any business from me. I'll remember his ID. Quote: It would make for a funny contest prize though wouldn't it? great idea!

The nickel arrived today, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The "dent" turns out to be more of a rim ding and/or slight cut. I would have mentioned it if I were the seller of this coin. This is not an AU coin but an XF with some rim damage. It is worth the money I paid, but then it isn't what I thought it should be and not what was presented in the title. I did not do anything but write and ask if he could sell it to the next high bidder, but I got fire and brimstone for asking. So I didn't really lose, but I like to get a bargain on ebay by doing a lot of looking and in this case, well I guess it's a draw. There's nothing wrong with trying to win an auction at a great bargain price on ebay. I did not get feedback for this transaction, will probably not leave any, if I did, I would probably lean toward a negative because of the attitude I got from the seller and the coin being not as described with undisclosed damage.

The coin does not appear to be damaged and looks like it should grade XF unless the surfaces have been altered.
The price you paid seems to be fair from this perspective. It certainly wasn't a rip but I can't see where your complaint lies.

There is a cut or ding on the rim which also raised the rim edge at the O in God. That's all, otherwise surfaces seem undisturbed. I just did a little tweaking in a photo program to try and duplicate the tone.

Thanks for the update. This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. But, looking at the coin from your photos, you probably jumped the gun by not waiting until the coin arrived. Because I think you probably would have reacted differently. As you said, it was a decent deal and you take a bit of a chance sometimes on ebay. I know when I have bought on ebay, sometimes the coin comes and you think "Uh - well, it's ok, not great, but the price was good, so ok". Othertimes, you think "wow - this coin is great and a paid the it's ok, not great price for it". Looks like a nice nickel to me. Give it a little love and it will shine! Best regards, Ken
