Without the highly distracting marks on the cheek I could see this grading in the MS65 range.

I'll make the argument.... it is the FS 501 & could pass for FB. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...01-fb/145551

The luster is off. I'd want better photos before dropping 3 bills. If it really is a nice coin, it looks like a no problem 64FB with a shot at 65.

It's a nice coin with a nice RPM, but it's too much money. Probably better that you passed on it.

Never look back - it is a nice coin but there will be others.

Well, toots. Coin Rejector is right on that observation. Those bands are comparable to the other FB listings for 1943-S/S. I hadn't even considered that factor, but it's easily a 2x multiplier on the final graded price. I'd say that moves it much closer towards the "You messed up" territory.

Probably just demonstrates the obvious, that I am far better at spotting varieties than I am at properly grading coins.

So for future reference, what's the right call here? If the seller offers returns, do you buy the coin aggressively at auction, evaluate in hand, and then possibly return if it's cleaned or low grade? Thinking like that bugs me. Is there an elegant way to handle the situation? Fully acknowledging that glamor pics sometimes hide glaring flaws on expensive coins.

I generally agree with the notion that you shouldn't dwell on regrets or missed opportunities. However, I am also a very strong believer in taking an objective look at mistakes (both potential and confirmed) with an eye towards learning and future improvement. As you said, there will be a next time. =)

That's a nice RPM FB Mercury dime, if not for the scratch on the cheek I'd grade at least a 65. A hundred dollars doesn't seem to be out of price range with today inflation with this variety, but can't tell if there's any other defect without seeing coin in hand, does seller offer return?

That particular seller accepts returns. Seller pays shipping, but that's no big deal.Their description text also says that the coin must be returned in their 2x2, unopened.

There's also a large ding in the right obverse field. I just don't see this at 65, luster aside.

FS 501 isn't particular rare, but one with FB is hard to come by. I'm not sure about if that's a ding on the obverse without checking.

My take based on the sale, what most overlook, is that $116 was almost certainly not the bidders maximum offer. I would further assume that the winning bidder realized what they were looking at atnd placed a bid closer to what the current market is. Looking deeper, at the PCGS price guides, the last sale of a full-band MS65 was that of David Lawrence for $220 back in 2017. With no MS64FB auction listings (which is what I'd conservatively grade this one) seeing around $200 in MS64 seems fair considering a down market on the series. However, with only 16 total MS grades combined it would have been worth the gamble in the $150-75 range. Just my opinion.
